Hands down #1 VESUVIO'S Dundas west and high park. #2 Il Paesano's at lakeshore and browns line. #3 Angelos Table on yong street.

California sandwiches and San franciscos aren't even in the top 3. Thank me later terbites....to all you veal sandwich lovers!

I sometimes go there for convenience (open 24/7) but they are nowhere close to best. The veal sits around in a pile on a tray for who knows how long. All the good ones make 'em fresh to order.

Gotta agree that Remo's is pretty good for their Veal and Roast Beef Sandwiches! Rudy and Kelly do a great job at this little location.
My what a small world.

Their veal sandwich is very big. Ever see George Chuvalo there?

Gustoso's around the corner from Remo's is pretty good too (they have roasted chicken too).

They still make pretty good gnocchi.

There's also Tre Rose Bakery in Rexdale.

It's located at Yonge and Harbour st, if you like extra sauce they are happy to oblige.

I just had one today at Sanremo bakery, very good......and come to think of it Perugina's at renforth/eglinton...both these places are way better than all the California and San Frans.

Il Paesano on Brownsline
Il Paesano used to be at Hwy 5&10 Mississauga but closed down a few years ago. They did an awesome veal sandwich so I'm not surprised here.

San Frans is my favourite though. The thing weighs almost as much as a football. Eating one of those could do you for both lunch and dinner :)

Downtown San Frans is my favourite as well, but undoubtedly the Claremont Cali's sandwich is significantly bigger. It's not even close.

Mind you, you pay for it. I believe Cali's is $7.75 and San Frans is $6.

Gents,

I think some further clarification is needed. There are 2 basic ways that veal "sangawiches" are made:

1) Veal is coated/breaded and fried in a pan while you wait, then served immediately
2) Veal is coated/breaded and fried in a pan or baked, then it sits in a pan of tomato sauce for hours until served

I have had both styles of Veal, but, I prefer the first method without a doubt. The 2nd style is too soggy, the coating comes off often, the veal slides around on the kaiser etc... Mush, mush, mush.

I doubt that most of these additional places listed in this thread use method #1 - a method most aficionados prefer.

Of all the places listed in this thread, the original 3 from Clinton/Claremont area use the #1 method. (Even though I've seen some San Francescos places deep fry their veal!)

I agree with you, IMO there is only one San Franncescos, the Clinton location, all other locations were franchised and it doesn't taste the same.

The other factor to consider is everyone's palate, some may genuinely like the soggy taste and hard to argue with what they like, that's why there's such a wide range of favourite places for veal sandwiches.

In the old days, you couldn't beat a SF hot veal sandwich, a cup of their hot green olives and a beer next door at the Monarch.
