I actually had to look that up myself and sure enough Guns n Roses and AC/DC are in Glam band category. Perhaps definition of a Glam band goes beyond than just the makeup shit.
I think it depends on whose definition you look at but Glam definitely has a fashion component to it that ACDC lacks. ACDC I would say are classic rock, hard rock but not Glam Rock. Unless the school boy outfit does it.

From wikipedia
AC/DC are an Australian rock band, formed in 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young.[1] A hard rock/blues rock band,[2] they have also been considered a heavy metal band,[3][4][5][6] although they have always dubbed their music simply "rock and roll".[7]

Similarly GnR is not Glam they were considered opposite of it in many ways...... they have very little in common with Poison, Cinderella and that ilk.

I wouldn't consider AC/DC glam rock. Hard rock/ blues that's more like it. If we are going to consider AC/DC glam rock because of a school boy outfit then how about Norwegian black metal band Carpathian forest? They got some pretty crazy outfits so are they glam black metal now?

I had my own glam rock band, we were called Disgraziat. No one could sing or write songs but we drank a lot. Our bass player called himself Sergeant Sphincter, he was homeless.

Honestly I would rather listen to ETM's Bunny Ranch hangover than glam rock.

Since Glam music is defined as 'musicians who wore outrageous costumes, makeup, and hairstyles, particularly platform shoes and glitter', the school boy outfit would classify as such. Also Glam music has its own 'subgenre' i.e - Glam Rock, Glam Metal, Glam Punk, etc. I would think though this is more of a UK terminology. I would rather call AC/DC 'Hard Rock'.

Glam rock has its sub-genres, most of it crap.

Would White Zombie qualify as glam-rock?

Gwar - ultimate glam rock band! Saw them in Amsterdam, I'll be scarred for the rest of my life. lol

The last time I was in that city I had extra money so I thought I'd stay someplace decent (name witheld so they don't track me down). The first day was VE Day, a glorious drunk. The next day, Ajax won the Eredivise - I kept right on drinking. Hit all the hotspots: Black/White, Cafe Small Talk, The Paradiso.... The next morning, when the cleaning lady showed up I gave her a roll of $20.00 American to keep things quiet.

In the 80's there were a bunch of glam rock bands.
Those, I would call 'hair metal' or 'cock-rock', not glam. Glam was David Bowie (c. Ziggy Stardust), Lou Reed (of the same period), Gary Glitter and New York Dolls, among others. Much more overt of course was Kiss. Everything that followed, however, is mere pastiche: stylistic similarities aside, there is little that Bon Jovi or Poison have in common with pioneers like Bolan and Bowie.

There's some truth to that legman. What passed for glam rock in the 80's was corporate cock pop-rock, I license to print money above all else. The actual music was secondary to image and marketing, the 80's is the weak sister of the 70's and 90's in terms of rock music. Most of it is unmemorable, what came later was far more interesting.

I spent less time at Larry's Hideway (a wretched dive bar) than The Gasworks but I enjoyed it more. They were both gone by the spring of 88.

Your mother
The first Darkness album was great. Didn't like the second one much, apparently it was fuelled by cocaine, which frequently ruins a band.
Glad to hear that they are back, I'll try to listen to the new stuff.

Glam rock had costumes but in an effort to look glamourous..... which is why white zombie and gwar are not glam. same goes for acdc the schoolboy costume is a joke not meant to look sexy, glamourous, crazy high fashion etc..

Bowie was the king of glam in the 70's. In the 80's he normalized his look somewhat, but he set the standard and created the idea of glam, with the help of Marc Bolan, Freddie Mercury and a few other British artists (Killing Joke, anyone?)....... The 80's American so-called glam rock bands were a bad corporate joke.

Kathleen, all the bands you listed as glam rock I list as pop rock. In my short time as a roadie, I would list them as the big hair and gonorrhea bands.

Even though you left out Van Halen and The Scorpions it's a good list Badkat....this is for you. They must have drunk a lot of plumb schnaps in the making of this video.

I think glam rock and pop rock in the 80s had a certain amount of overlap.

Perspective changes with time but I would still rather have my finger nails pulled out than listen to Bon Jovi. Most of mainstream rock was corporate pop, but it made lots of money.

But I did a 180 on a band I couldn't stand in the 80's. Not sure what it was, the hot gf or the Fact that they consistently brighten up my darkest days....

I would list Rammstein as techno rock. They didn't go out of their way to attract a non-German speaking audience, it just happened that way. They've got a mix of everything = including a little bit of Wagner.
