Although I thought there was a previous thread on this, I can't find it.

To the point it would now seem that this was always attempted murder rather than rape as the most serious of the charges.

"According to the Delhi Police, the juvenile associate of the men who executed the gang rape of December 16 was the most brutal of them all. According to the chargesheet. . . . He extracted her intestine with his bare hands and suggested she be thrown off the moving vehicle devoid of her clothes."

I know there will be objection here on TERB, but this truly seems to be a case that cries out for the death penalty - and that seems to be the overwhelming sentiment in India.

If it is unquestionably clear the right culprits are in custody, then hang 'em high.

Although it isn't much discussed in the press. There seem to be both caste and class issues involved in this case. She was a Medical Student from North India, her beau a Software Engineer, all of those charged came from the slums of Delhi and a number were recent migrants to the city at least one from Bengal.

It could be a cultural thing too...in some cultures ..it would be her fault...for doing something as trivial as looking at another man or other disrespectful thing( according to their culture)..so stupid.!
chances are they will be hanged..good on them
we live in such a tolerant society.....its sickening sometimes

Her death might not be in vain if it changes that culture for the better. Same with the shooting of 15 year old Malala. There is a point in time in the progress of a people when one brave woman changes society for the better -- Rosa Park. (On the other hand, if Rosa Park pulled that stunt in India or Pakistan, she might have been killed on the spot.)

something is clearly fucked in that country... 1 rape reported every 17 hours in the country's capital, which apparently has the highest rape cases in the entire country. Imagine that happening in Ottawa or Washington DC.

On another note, if a new law was passed to put rapists on deathrow, I think a lot of India's politicians would be on the list xD

They do things right when they have to do.. like banning of guns. I remember a famous movie star being jailed for almost a decade after being caught possesing a gun at home. Wouldn't that be nice in America?

New Dehli's metro region has 14 million people, so proportionally, it would be like 1 reported rape every 8 days in Ottawa. Still, that sort of outright viciousness is pretty rare anywhere, and they have a justice system that moves painfully slow when the media spotlight is not on it like it is now. There are certainly some things they could improve.

What is less known is that a 17 year old rape victim committed suicide and a 2 year old girl was also raped during the same week that the 23 year was in hospital. Who knows how many others were also raped in the past week.

I've been to India a few times. I'd take the media reports with a grain of salt. I don't agree with the death penalty in any case.

Rape statistics
Only one in about 70 cases of rape gets reported. This means that about 69 women get raped before one lodges an official complaint. Of the reported cases (only one out of 70), only 20 per cent are convicted. Consequently, only three out of 1,000 rapists ever get convicted. So most rapists can get away with rape. A woman gets raped every half an hour in India. So what in the world is keeping women silent about this heinous crime?

http://www.global-sisterhood-network.org/content/view/498/76/

Undereporting is a huge problem from what I've heard. Wikipedia has the rape rate at 1.8/100K which is very low but if there's anything to the stuff quoted above it's much higher.

According to official statistics, 572 rapes were reported in Delhi last year. Police say they have registered 635 rape cases this year.

And that's reported rapes......almost 2 rapes a day in a City

http://livewire.amnesty.org/2013/01/03/india-rapedeath-penalty-no-solution/

Violence against women is endemic – more than 220,000 cases of violent crimes against women were reported in 2011 according to official statistics, with the actual number likely to be much higher.

Now I'm sure there are other places that are bad or worse but doesn't take anything away from the fact that there's clearly a problem (on this planet)

I was really disgusted when I heard they stuck a piece of rebar up inside her and when they pulled it out it her lower intestines came out with it. The doctors had to remove the intestines and she died as a result. Gross.
