To me, the american team winning the gold medal holds no importance. It's just another country other than Canada winning, and I lose interest.

Revolver, Revolver........
How can you NOT be inspired by the miracle on ice? In '72 it was a group of superstar NHLers who BARELY beat the Soviets. In the '80 olympics, a group of pimply, no-name college kids rose to a most intimidating occasion and beat the greatest hockey team in history!!
In addition to the inspirational, DAvid vs Golieth aspect of the victory, the Miracle raised the profile and visibility of hockey in the US like nothing else before, inspiring a generation of superstars like Brian Leetch, Mike Modano, Chris Chelios, Tony Amonte, etc. to take up hockey. Before the Miracle, hockey held a status equivalent to arena football south of the border. This makes it arguably the most important event in hockey history.
Some homework for you: Rent the movie MIRACLE when you get a chance. It's a little sappy, but a good film nonetheless. Kurt Russell is excellent as Herb Brooks.
Finally, I believe Eruzione played one or two games in the NHL (with the Rangers, I think), but didn't make much of a go of it. I guess whgen you captain the Miracle team and score a goal like that, there's not much left to accomplish!
