Delusions of grandeur strike again. Sure they'll send me notes. Just like your $17 and $20 bills will make a difference. I suggest you do not dine in the same place twice. I've never 'gotten even' but I'm nicer than some.
i will continue to eat in the same places. i will inform them that some random food bringer showed me that food bringers are angry people and look down on everyone else cuz they have to beg for half their wage. i will tell them that you told me never to tip again. then i will make sure to take a sample of the food with me and have it tested everytime and if there is any trace of anything that shouldn't be there, i will sue. then i will take their restaurant and pay my employee's a decent liveable wage and tell people that tipping is forbidden in my restaurant, see what kinda business that drums up.

So if a 'gateway' is what you want, you need to look further into the hospitality industry. I understand what you are trying to say, but your idea of a 'gateway' leaves much to be desired; nor does it apply to hospitality.

You do realize you're sticking up for a drop-out??
How does it not apply to hospitality? We are talking about wait staff, not Fairmont general managers. No course, no formal training, no government certification or licence is required to carry food to a table for money.

As for the drop out comment, Simon is more qualified in his particular job in the workforce than is a waiter. His skill set does not require a diploma, but it does require a licence. Waiting tables requires neither. That makes it harder to become a truck driver than to become a server, regardless of how many degrees a random server may possess.

Actually a server needs to take agovt course called smartserve to legaly work. In Alberta they have that and a course called WHMIS for food safety and hazardous material handling. I also have courses in sommolier and first aid as required by my work place.
And of course 20 years+ on the job training

Fortunately I work in establishments that wouldn't be patronized by some of the posters here. Frankly they wouldn't fit in.

Sorry dude, but SmartServe can be done online in a couple hours (and has nothing to do with skills), WHMIS is not a requirement for waiting tables, and neither is first aid. I'm not sure what sommolier training is, but I do know that sommelier training, while a nice qualification for certain waiters in certain establishments, is not a prerequisite for serving tables. Still no comparison to the training and licensing requirements of truck drivers.

yeah i worked at a bar for a year and no one there had smart serve, it is not mandatory. i have seen the test and it is one of those test where the instructor gives you the test and then basically hands you the answers and it is all common sense shit. i had to get whmis training as well, several times over. never heard of a restaurant forcing people to learn first aid and never have i ever heard of it being something needed to get hired. the things you are talking about are all things that the instructor right at the start says "everyone is gonna pass, this is a formality". except first aid, that you need to learn, i was trained with the deck company i worked for class b first then class a the next year.

nice try on the classy thing considering you know none of us.

Actually I called it with simon not knowing about sommolier.
As for the anyone else I fully acknowledge the lack in many establishments. But any who have fine dined know the difference a good server can make for an evening.
Heck when I do french service I'm cooking their meal at the table too!
Just because training isn't govt run doesn't make it any less credible. I've spent years learning my craft. Insult it and will happily give back.

Butler you are in a very different league than the majority of servers out there, and you know it. No one is insulting you - you appear to be a professional and are the kind of server who makes an evening out, and deserves a solid tip. But to put a typical Jack Astor's server in the same category as you is not realistic. Or, for that matter, most other servers no matter how high-end their restaurant. There are still no barriers to entry, and the existence of a number of high-calibre waiters with 20 years experience doesn't change that.

But you lose credibility when you can't even spell the word right ( or tell the difference between me and Simon. Or read a full sentence.)

Oh wait, the North Alberta Institute of Technology spells it with an "o", so you must be a real classy server dude:

These two (one of which couldn't get through high school) only give credit to certain jobs. CapitalGuy (I think) is an educated person, but uses it to degrade others. Simon, ooohh Simon, is a hanger-on who piggybacks others statements while driving a truck. Says he bartended, but couldn't cut it, so is here complaining.

A server could do a trucker's job way easier then a trucker doing a server's. One lacks a disposition that the other doesn't. Guess which is which.

Fast typing in BB. But you are correct on the spelling error. And on a certain level you are correct about the Jack Astor server. But then again the job requirements are different. Ever have to serve a kids B-day party. An office xmas party. It is an exercise in herding cats gentlemen. Requiring patience beyond measure.
As for job barrier maybe not not swiss chalet.....but without a good resume you will start as a busser. And learn. Just like any other proffession.

where oh where did i say i was a bartender ? now you are making things up. i already told you i mastered carrying food when i was 5, there was no need to go farther in that. i will gladly hand you the keys to a big truck load it down, hell i will even give you a standard load not the shit i used to haul, just make you 80,000 pounds then fire you across colorado. i will see you on the other side of Eisenhower and vail. actually i probably won't lol.

go read back on all this, hell anyone should and see the pure bitterness and anger that is coming across from you. all i have said is you wasted a degree and you have the simplest job out there and then pages of personal attacks from you. you are so very angry. jeeze man.

I (stupidly) thought you were attempting to speak from an experienced position (same mistake I made thinking you actually had a job/education that would correlate to your snobbish attitude) when I mentioned you bartending. But I guess you mastered something at five that nobody would pay you to do as an adult.

I repeat I am not angry. Just offended and amused that you of all people would have anything to say on the topic of skills. A high school drop-out should humble himself on such topics of economics.

BTW, your knowledge of the law is also not accurate on other topics; and picking up boxes is mastered by the age of three.

Call me when you try and hire a lawyer for that case, so I can laugh at you.

And don't worry about your poor tipping on low cost food. I more than make up for you.
