Leafs'll get their 2nd win tomorrow against the Canes... if they don't it'll be a long, long season.

won't it be such a season anyways? they are clearly not going to make the playoffs even if they have a win percentage of 66% for the remainder of the season...

for comparison, the league's best win percentage last year was 71%, only 5% MORE... anything over 60% and you are usually top 4 in standings in your division.

so, my guess is it's going to be a long season anyways... with no lottery picks to look forward to.

the most exciting time for the leafs in the 12 months ahead might be UFA season.

Not that I'm disagreeing with the gist of your point, but with the wacky points system of the NHL you cannot accurately use percentages. In a game that goes past regulation the two teams combine for 150% in that game since one team gets 100% and the other gets 50%. That is fucked.

Points per game for a team in relation to the league average points per game for that particular season (since it will change from year to year--also totally fucked) would be somewhat more accurate.

Monster was good tonight. Carolina stinks but he was still good. How will they do against the Wings tomorrow?

Big question is will Wilson start the monster on consecutive nights. For the buds sake I hope so because Toskala is not the answer.

The way I see it they will have to do it at some point if he is to be the number one, so now is as good a time as any. Coming off a win and going up against a good team not playing well in Detroit.

Finally we agree on something. Next you'll be saying that Alfie is going to have more points than Heatly this year.

I wouldn`t be surprised to see the Leafs win tonight. Then again, they might just lose in overtime or a shootout again.

If the points system in the NHL is so totally fucked up, then why do they do it that way? If I understand correctly how the NHL works right now, why not just go back to giving two points for a win and nothing if you lose, and then letting games end in a tie with one point each? Why this obsession with having every game have a 'winner' and a 'loser'? Since it's so fucked up, why not just fix it by going back to the reasonable points system? (This is an honest question, as I'm not arguing with you that it's fucked up - I agree that it is.)

To me a tie in a regular season hockey game is a perfectly legitimate outcome; so, I like the way things were back in the day.
60 Minutes and if it's tied it's tied. No overtime, focus on next game.
I don't care for all the gimicky 4 x 4 and shootout stuff.

I wish I had an answer for you. Maybe they're trying to be politically correct/sensitive and not hurt anybody's feelings by giving a point even if you lose.

As Kilgore also says, nothing wrong with a tie. I could accept overtime and even the stupid shootout if it was for all the points. Like in the playoffs, if you lose, you get nothing. It's better than the idiocy that goes on now.

yeah, I agree... but, to calculate divisional standings, percentages are the most telling stat. that is why nhl teams use it when comparing eachother. If I only have a few seconds to look at stats, I prefer my scout to have them all laid out in percentages...

Gussie was great, Kessel scores his first and the Leafs dominate in a 5-1 win over Detroit. Too bad for that bad line change or Gussie would have got a shutout.

I could not be happier that ties are a thing of the past. Ties are/were stupid. I never played for a tie, always to win and if my team did not win(but tied) we felt like it was a loss.
When the NHL decided to play to win, many Governor's, GMs, etc expressed a fear of not getting something for a tie at the end of 60 minutes, so they came up with this system.
We will play until there is a winner, but the loser, should they be tied after 60 minutes, will still get a point. We cannot, however, have games going three 20 minute overtime periods in the regular season so the shootout was introduced.

As much as OTL points helped the Leafs, I would drop it in a second if it were up to me.
Play 60, if tied go an extra five, if still tied have a shootout until there is a winner with the winning team getting two points and the loser getting none.
We would still give two points out of tradition.
