I am sure the Russian will reappear and end up being as much trouble for Tony (and maybe more) as he is for Paulie and Christopher. Maybe he's interior decorating in Czechslovakia!

Good episode (#2) tonight. Rather surprising role being established for Steve Buscemi.

No session with Dr. Malfi tonight, which (over the seasons) I've come to basically tune out. That is, if she's dressed.

The Adrianna-FBI thing is heating up. Glad to see a return to that.

One other thing. Did I miss Bobby and Tony's sister's wedding???

I was thinking the same thing "did i miss that wedding." I must have.

One scene i thought amusing was Tony Soprano telling the other Tony (Buscemi) ..... "i deserve respect. Got it?" ........Got it. And then thinking Tony Soprano is talking all tough and hes wearing that ugly shirt.

I thought Adrianna was going to spill her guts to the ladies about her involvement with the FBI. Instead shes going to us the FBI to get rid of Miss Franchesca (spelling). She tired of Chris's flirtation with her, and is taking an advantage of a golden opportunity.

Whats with the wack on the alledged informant? Tony didn't give his okay on that? Or did he and i missed something? --- Kev

I have watched (and rewatched in some cases) all of the episodes of season 2-4. You didn't miss a wedding. They didn't stage one. The producers just brought Janice and Bobbie back together this season as a married couple and the little actress who plays Sophia (Bobbie's daughter) is a different girl. Looks like the honeymoon is over (at least for Janice). According to her, Bobbie still hasn't found her "rosebud".

I am surprised a new love interest has not been introduced for Carmela. She is looking great this season. Definately lost a lot of weight since last season. Having a suitor for her would be a great way to turn up the divorce a notch with Tony as he would, undoubtedly, freak out about Carmela having a potential new husband.

I thought for sure that Adrianna was going to die in a car accident after she left Carmela's so impaired and on the verge of spilling her beans to the girls. That would have been an interesting twist to see how they would react to the pressure the FBI is putting on her.

As for the Montesarro (spelling) whacking, the thing that this show has consistently demonstrated is that no one usually says "kill him". It's so much more subtle than that. Remember the whack that Carmine, Sr. suggested to Tony on the cell phone regarding Johnny Sack. He never said kill him or even hurt him. Even Tony wasn't sure he heard what he heard.

Speaking of Carmine, Sr., I did not quite understand the scene at the funeral parlour with Johnny Sack. Does anyone understand what he was so upset about? I think it had something to do with the rosary that was wrapped around his hand in the casket, but beyond that I didn't get what was going on between the two of them. If someone could clue me in to it that would be great.

It looks like the two Tony's relationship is going in a different direction maybe for the worse. Tony Soprano clearly can't relate to his desire to go straight and, being the sociopathic monster that he is, has, in his own words, "no use for him." Cousin Tony, too, seems to have little patience for the other Tony's angry outbursts. I agree, that it is a little hard to show someone enormous respect when they're wearing a seriously ugly shirt.

I think that the funeral parlour scene relates to a rift in the Catholic church regarding Vatican reforms instituted in the 1960s which liberlaized the Church in some ways (not sure which ways). Carmine's son's wife -- who is a follower of the sect that is against these "Vatican II" reforms (BTW I think this is also Mel Gibson's outlook) -- attached a medallion signifying these beliefs on the rosary in the hands of the deceased, and Johnny Sack is disgusted.

ANyone confirm this acount?

Carmine Jr. vs. Johnny Sacks

They were both upset... the rosary bead thing was just an avenue for them.

Carmine Jr. likely thinks he will move back to New York to take over his father's family, while Johnny thinks it should be him because Carmine Jr. has been living it up in Florida while Johnny did all the work. This is setting something good up... one of those two will die very soon.

I love how Tony is handling him too... that scene where Johnny is taking a crap and starts to go on and on about Carmine Jr. and Tony just walks out... priceless. On another note, who takes a shit out in the open at a SC?? I can tell you I certainly never would!

I have to admit that I was a little disappointed with Steve Buscemi's Tony Blondeto (sp?) character. I really hope he turns into a badass soon... seeing him play a straight guy was not what I was expecting.

Just to clarify my question about the funeral parlour, I am wondering why Carmine JR. was so upset with Johnny Sack about something with his father, Carmine, Sr.
It was over the fact that the rosary beads that were in Carmine Sr.'s hands were from the Opus Dei group. Its an extremely right wing group of Catholics made famous by the book The DaVinci Code...

Many SCs in the US don't have doors on the stalls. This is to try and deter people from wacking off in the club and its also a deterent againts people who want to snort coke or shoot up.
I used to say I would never take a dump in one of those, but then one night I had to shit real bad and when ya gotta shit ya gotta shit...

Well, they can't ever say those words. The Feds have listening devices and phone taps in so many places. They have to say it without saying it. A court isn't going to allow a search warrent based on an overheard conversation that simply says, "You know that thing with that guy. Well, lets take care of it." Its too vague to justify anything.

Ha!!! That was my favorite line, too, about the Apostles' Protection Program!

I find the thread about the lack of doors on the stalls more than a little weird...........

As for the woman introduced (the former real life wife of actor Don Johnson, Patti D'Arbeneville (spelling?) - she is Bosco's abused mother on the Third Watch series) I forget her name, but her character is supposedly a Shylock (Jewish term for money lender) with a reputation for toughness. She will be a great nemesis for Tony. Remember the difficulty he had with relating to a woman as a business equal when he was in Italy and had to deal with Anna Maria (i think that was her name), the daughter of the boss of the family there? Great character, surprised we didn't see more of a plot line there.

I suspect Carmine Jr. will try to put a contract out on Johnny Sack. He was clearly fuming at his Dad's funeral about the lack of respect he was getting over his Dad's death. I rewatched the scene and realized that the rosary beads or medal was just the catalyst. The real issue was that Carmine Jr. was feeling disrespected. See that guy who offered his condolences to Carmine, then he turns around to introduce his wife, Nicole, and the guy is already gone!

I foresee a proposed hit on Johnny Sack backfiring on Carmine Jr. because, after all, the guys know Johnny better and know he's an earner.

With all the FBI stuff in the second episode of the season with emphasis on Tony, I suspect a big trial for Tony this season. His life is definately careening out of control. No regular family support structure, trouble in the business family and time in a jail cell is definately on the horizon for Mr. Soprano!

The rat pack reference was definately a veiled reference to Massarone, the rat!

Oh, just a side thought. Perhaps the looming possibility of Tony going to jail for life will bring him and Carmela back together, again, as he realizes what he's lost or could potentially lose forever. Maybe I'm too romantic, but it looks like he's already starting to realize that living alone in his mother's house full of creepy memories. The original lure of cheating isn't so much fun when you don't have to sneak behind your wife's back!!

I'm on a Sopranos roll. Maybe, as the cousin Tony B. starts his new straight life, after being on the inside for 15 years, his cousin Tony S. starts a new life in the joint only he won't get out after 15 years for the stuff they'll charge him with.

Kathy P - Shylock is not a Jewish term any more than Christkiller is a Jewish term. Shylock was Shakespeare's money-lending character in The Merchant of Venice who calls for a pound of flesh as a repayment of debt. Shakespeare doesn't paint Shylock in a very sympathetic light, except for in his soliloquy, which, in the hands of the right director/actor, can be quite sympathetic.

On another note: Drea deMatteo is quite hot on the show. I saw her in NYC eating brunch at a great Cuban place in Little Italy with the guy who pays Bobby and someone else from the show, and she looked pretty average. She was not half naked and in full makeup at the time.

Great parallel, Kathy. Could it be that Tony B. takes over as boss when Tony S. goes away?? Its probably not likely though... I read that HBO has ordered half a season's worth of new Sopranos for next year (6 or 7 episodes, I can't remember which). If Tony is going to go to jail or get whacked, it won't be until then. I think they'll just be all over him with surveillance this season, with an arrest in the final episode of the year.

"I really hope he turns into a badass soon... seeing him play a straight guy was not what I was expecting."

I think they're portraying him this way just to make it all the more dramatic when he does show his hard side. They've already hinted in several ways that he's still got the potential.

My favourite bit of dialogue so far for this season was the exchange in Melfi's office, when Tony insists she be honest with him, and when she is, he loses his cool. Classic Tony.
