Great show on the CBC about the life of Henry 8.

I'm aware that the writers take some historical liberty about on the show, but still it tries to stay close to the truth.

Jonathon Meyers looks nothing like Fat Henry (probably cause he has 6 pack abs instead of a 50 inch waist) but he definitely does great in portraying the meglomaniac that Henry could be.

Each week, or at least every 2'nd week - there is always what I like to call "the Gruesome Execution of the Week" Either a guy being dunked head first into a vat of boiling tar, or being burned alive (last week) or hung with chains, or having his head chopped off (if he was lucky).

Great TV.

In last week's episode, Henry gets to meet his future wife - Anne of Cleaves who Henry is very upset with her not being a knock out. Anne of Cleaves is played by Joss Stone and I'm watching this and thinking, "hey man, this woman is fucking hot looking" but Henry calls her a "Flander's Mare"

The lack of historical accuracy bothers me; OTOH, I realize that they have to have a hottie Henry VIII for the lady viewers and hottie wives.

I see it on and off. My nieces LUUUVVVVV it!

Forget the gruesome executions, how about the hot sex scenes in this series. Here's a scene with the King and Anne Boelyn. http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2529629/natalie_dormer_the_tudors_sex_scene/

At the end of an episode a few weeks ago, the screen flipped back and forth between the King's reading of the Lord's Prayer ("...the power and the glory...") and the King having wild sex with his mistress. I guess the point was to show the hypocrisy of it all.

In his younger years Henry cut quite the dashing figure, however, certainly by the time of his marriage to Anne of Cleaves he was starting to pack on the pounds.

Don't watch the show, but it looks interesting. My PVR is full with american tv shows. Its good to see such an improvement on canadian television. A great improvement over the days of the Beachcombers and the Littlest Hobo.

I have seen 2-3 episodes. Did you know that Henry VIII was the father of Queen Elizabeth I?
Yes.

She was the last of the Tudors. Old Henry was so all consumed with having a male hier that he didn't pay much attention to his daughters. His son - Edward would die at the age of 15 or so. The throne would be held by his first daughter - Mary I for a few years before her own death and then Elizabeth took over for one of England's most sucessful eras.

It's interesting that the British / Enlish monarchs that have had the longest reigns have been:

Victoria
Elizabeth II
Elizabet I

Henry was a very interesting character. He basically changed the face of the world be breaking the strangle-hold on power that the Catholic church had at the time. If it wasn't for Henry we could still be under the papal thumb (not that many places still aren't.)

Ironic though that Henry's reasons for breaking from the church were totally self serving - his dick.

Had Henry been alive today, he would have been a Terbite for sure.

I've watched the first 2 seasons of this on DVD and it's pretty good. I'll watch season 3 when it comes out on DVD too.

If you like historical dramas you should check out 'Rome'.
Lasted 2 seasons on HBO, and to me anyway, it is much much better than 'The Tudors'.

Maybe so but I still have a hard time believing he looked like Jonathon Rhys Meyers who isn't even a redhead, LOL. http://www.marileecody.com/henry8images.html

I used to date a guy who looked like Jonathon Meyers - boy does that bring back some wild memories. Excuse me for a few minutes...I'll be right back.:D

Well, I thought Rome was more of an ensemble cast with a million fascinating and intriguing story lines.

With The Tudors, Henry 8 is like a musician who can only play one note and it weighs the series down a bit.

Henry is depicted as a paranoid, fearful, egomaniacal guy who sucks the oxygen out of every room he's in because at his core he's basically about intimidation.

Everything in the known physical universe must take second place to the insatiable demands of Henry's dick for complete unrestricted freedom to do whatever it wants, whenever it wants, and with whoever he wants.
He's basically a rock star.

The problem with Rome was that it could not sustain itself after Julius was killed off. No actor has played Julius Caesar better than Cairan Hinds, he was the dominant character of the first season, the show flopped post Ides of March.

I haven't seen the Tudor's, does the unjustly neglected Henry VII get any screen time? He used French money to take the English Crown by force and in the process ending perpetual civil war. Then he proceeded to rule England like a Tony Soprano - if you were with him you got rich, you went against him at grave risk. By the time Henry VIII suceeded him he was an absolute monarch. Both France and England went in this direction; England would gradually reform itself...we know what happened to the French Royal Family.

If I remember correctly, there is little reference to his father. His father's method of taking control of England explains some of Henry's paranoia, fearful the same could happen to him. An excellent 4 part documentary on Henry, is a British series called Henry VIII: Mind of a Tyrant.

Henry VIII was a disaster for England, he lost every war he waged in Europe and eventually ended up a doormat for both Francis I (France) and Charles V (Hapsburg Emperor). Had the latter decided to invade England he could have sailed up the Thames unopposed and Henry's head would have ended up on a pike. But the fabulously wealthy Emperor coudn't be bothered with such a pauper State.
