Thin red line!

As of today, a thin red vertical line appeared on my laptop running from top to bottom and after reading a few forums it appears I may have no choice but to replace the entire lcd.

Has anyone ever encountered this before and know know the costs associated with it? Is it worth repairing?

FYI, the notebook is not under warranty as I bought it off someone from ebay who bought it at Circuit City in the U.S. and this model is not produced anymore.

Should I avoid the big box retailers like BestBuy and Futureshop to repair it?

How much would I be looking at roughly and can someone recommend a good pc repair shop?

How old is it/whats the spec? You're probably looking at $400+

Apparently the trick is usually to reseat the screen or screen assembly. I have no idea what would be involved or how skilled you are, but I'm reasonably sure you could get it done with preparation. If I had to take a shot in the dark, I'd bet that most companies would charge you $150-250 for a repair if they replace the part, which they probably will.

Reseating will only work @ 10% of the time. He most likely needs the LCD replaced. If he knows someone who he can pay a few $$$ to try reseating it is worth a try as his LCD is fairly pricey to replace. And the part itself will most likely cost way more than $250 unless he can find a deal somewhere like Ebay. The link he provided shows he has a 17" widescreen, not inexpensive I'm afraid.

Ist question is: any chance this unit is still under warranty? A thin red line is a manufacturing defect, usually not abuse and would be covered by the warranty. If your warranty is recently expired check to see if HP offers an extended warranty and if so purchase that and live with the line a week or so and then send it in for repair. That would be the least expensive way to go.

17.1 inch for that model roughly runs $200

Soo if you take it into a shop don't spend more then $250

Red lines are common for a broken lcd, Ive repaired Toshiba laptops back in the day, same thing, and ive taken apart my HP many times to replace parts.

Its an easy task to replace it to tell you the truth if you have repaired any laptops before.

Holy Crap! where did you find that price? I just browsed a bit and saw used for $280, new for $400. Still a LOT less than I expected to find.
