Voltron, Battle of the Planets/G-Force, Force Five, Loony Toons, Tom and Jerry.

Playing with lighters, riding bikes to distant corner stores, atomic fireball (hot cinammon jawbreakers), sour keys, dr pepper, mexicito chips that were so spicy that it was hard to finish a bag, playing video games at the arcade, firecrackers, fireworks, paper airplanes, putting roman candles in a pop bottle and shooting each other with them,

Glad someone mentioned the steel vs plastic playsets in playgrounds.

Can't believe that someone else also found porno mags stashed by the creek it was better than finding money.

Atari, Commodore 64, Nintendo, Sega, Turbo Grafix 16

comics, hardy boys, tintin, asterix and obelix, dinosaurs, tolkien (the 2 towers was too much for a 12 year old kid but the hobbit was readable), james and the giant peach, charlie and the chocolate factory, danny dunn, the great brain (anyone remember that series of books?), conan the barbarian,

A-Team, Macgyver, Knight Rider, Little Rascals, Three Stooges, Leave it to Beaver, Silver Spoons, Different Strokes, Cosby Show, the Bionic Man, the Fall Guy, Magnum PI, Cheers, night court

Star Wars, Jaws

Getting away with wearing jogging pants or shorts almost all of the time.

Trick or Treating on Halloween

Crank phone calls

Hide and Go Seek at Night in the streets

Pick up road hockey and baseball games

Marco polo in the pool

Fishing for suckers (not sure what those fish are really called) in the ravine.

Tobaganning, snow forts, snowball fights, snow days

Transformers, GI Joe, Lego

Taking the bus to go downtown to see a movie and hang out at the mall

Bill Cosby stand up albums on vinyl, Monty Python records (didn't get half the jokes but it was still hilarious), 80s music in general but glam metal as my fav.

The Sears Catalogue and Vaseline.

-Vintage arcade video games: Space Duel, Mario Bros, Voltron, etc.

-Scratchy, tinny-sounding Pink Floyd and Led Zep bootlegs you bought at a headshop from a clerk who looked and acted exactly like Comic-Book-Guy from The Simpsons.

-Heavy metal music

-The film, New Wave Hookers.

  • buying a lola from the neighbourhood corner store
  • sneaking rides on my best friends bike when they went away on vacation and then never telling anyone
  • holding hands with a girl I had a crush on and feeling my heart pound
  • playing british bulldog during recess
  • taking the train ride at high park
  • saturday morning cartoons
  • christmas morning
  • swimming at sunnyside
  • school friends
  • snuggling under the covers during a dark rainy thunder and lightening storm
  • my french teacher, Mme **** and her blouses which were always open revealing her huge breasts (they must have been double 'D's and she was only about 5'2") - I always asked for help and over she would come, leaning over to help me at my desk - her blouse buttons undone save one lone button bearing all the strain of her buxom bussom - I always got high 90s in french

Every kid stole something from the corner store in grades 1-3!
I used to go to the York Woods Variety Store at Jane and Finch where they featured wrapped chocolate bars and bulk (before there reallyt was a bulk revival). The bulk chocolates were hershey bars - the flat kind. They were 3 cents each and wrapped hershey bars were a dime. I would hold up 3 in a stack and ask how much? The clerk would sometimes see one in my hand and sometimes see two or three. So whatever he saw Ipaid for. usually I paid for one.

I flew a lot of kites and balsa wood planes. I owned a Coleco CB40. I played table hockey with my brother. I went to the Library and discovered henry Higgins and the hardy Boys. Hey if we cant admit these things now... I congregated with friends in Black Creek to smoke cigarettes. Smokes were cheap then - like 60-70 cents a pack and two smokes entitled me to feel up a 13 year old girl when i was just 11. I had generous folks who let me keep the change -- up to 50 cents per run, when I went to the store for them. I went several times a day if they asked me.

When I wasnt stealing chocolate, I rode my bike (a grocery delivery model about 20 years old).

At 15 I upgraded to a 10 speed when I started working. Also at 15 I had a 20-year-old girlfriend. Something about being 20 years old that appealed to me in bikes and women.

Not so much something that I miss but something that I wish kids today had.....the ability to be able to walk to school without fear of being kidnapped and/or molested by some whacko who should have been locked away years ago

I typically hate reminiscences of the past as there is a tendency for them to be either overly maudlin or falsely positive (like the perma smiles on Happy Days when nothing bad ever happened). However, this has been one damn good thread.

On the serious side, it is hard to argue with the desire to return to a safer time when we didn't have to worry about terrorism, and children could walk (reasonably) freely through our neighbourhoods.

On the lighter side, I share others' great memories of sweet tarts, lolas, masturbation (that one made me laugh) and flying kites. I also think back to discovering Elvis Costello, The Talking Heads and The Clash. There was also the discovery of The Runaways, but the interest there wasn't really musical was it?

I'd just like to add:

Things that kids should not have access to:

Linda Lovelace
Marylin Chambers
Chesty Morgan
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Classic 70s Playboy Bunnies with full pubic mounds

It was too easy in those days to get access this -- even while underage. With the internet its even easier now.

btw: I've heard some say we didnt have to worry about leches in our day because it was the access to all this erotica that raised a generation of perverts. I say it happened then as well as now, but our parents, teachers, and authorities sheltered us from the awful truth. Remember we still learned as children -- dont talk to strangers, dont take candy from strangers, etc... We just were never told the entire reason why. I can easily tell my kids, I dont want someone to "Holly Jones" or "Cecilia Jhiang" you.
