I have a decent job that pays me pretty well. Recently I cashed in some stock options so I could lock in a profit rather than subject my theoretical fortunes to the whims of the stock market. The options yielded some good coin which I just banked pending a decision on where to invest it next.
Today I found myself at the Eaton Centre. On a whim, knowing that I had some cash in the bank account I decided to play a game - I would allow myself to buy absolutely anything at all that I wanted so long as I could physically carry it. All this really did was rule out plasma TVs at the Sony Store, but anything else was fair game.
But as I wandered through the increasingly Christmas-themed mall (Merry X-Mas everyone!) I actually couldn't bring myself to buy anything. I looked at watches, but I really don't need a new one right now so I passed. I looked at blenders but I already have one that works OK. I looked DVD players but I already have 2. I looked at CDs & DVDs but there was nothing new that I actually wanted. I looked at computers but there's nothing out that really makes my existing system obsolete. I looked at ties but I've got enough already.
So in the end, I got a baking sheet ($14 + taxes).
As I was leaving the mall I was thinking, "Fark - is that it? I've actually managed to collect every phystical, material good that I really want / need at this particular point in life. Is there nothing else?"
So I got home and made a donation to the cancer society. (Got an uncle with leukemia.) That made me feel a bit better, but I still feel a little empty right now.
Very odd ...
