An American penny costs 1.4¢ to make (it is mostly made of zinc - which is relatively expensive - with a copper coating).
A Canadian penny costs 0.008¢ to make (steel with a copper coating)
Pennies are now so valueless, there is little point in retaining them in circulation. How often have you seen a penny simply lying in the gutter with no-one even bothering to pick it up?!
We should do what the French did, back before the Euro. The lowest denomination coin was a 5 centime piece.
How's anyone seen that homeless guy downtown called the "Penny King?", he'll have to change up to the "Nickle King", but with 5 pennies to the nickle he'll only have enough to spell "Nick"
Pennies are so annoying. If I have a bunch of them, I make extra effort to get rid of them. For example, going to McD's or some place. The check is $5.01. I'll gladly cough up a penny before getting a wallet full of more change.
It is also annoying to have decimal places, Yen are better, there is just a number of Yen, no decimal places. We should have new dollars, worth about ten current cents, and no pennies and no decimal places. A dime would now be a new dollar.
I wonder how much a bank would charge to cash them all in. I remember the day when I first opened up my first savings account they used to give penny pinchers for free or paper rollers for pennies and never used to charge to put them in my account. Now a days they charge for everything.
