Photos use to be on film ( dark ages - before computers ) Now photos are digital, a computer sees binary numbers ( only 1 s and 0 s ) A photo is made of millions of 1 s and 0 s. Your computer translates these 1 s and 0 s into pixels and arranges them so that you can see a photo on your screen. Being that each photos is a unique arrangement of 1 s and 0 s, each photo has a unique signature or finger print. Tin Eye searches the internet for photos with the same digital signature and shows it to you.

Thx, that's interesting I always wondered how it worked myself, never actually used it but it's a useful tool for busting scammers on CL etc.

What happens if the pic is cropped from the top? The pictures signature would start differently.

There are ways to fool the system, but with millions of pixels and millions ( or hundreds of millions ) of binary numbers in a photo, simple modification is not enough to fool the system. There is still enough of a signature on the photo to match it up. Example : If I know you and and see half a photo of your face I could still recognize you, I may even still recognized that it is you from a quarter of a photo. I might not recognized it is your photo if I just see an ear or nose. A computer is much better at recognizing part of a photo, but there is a point where there is just not enough information for it to work on. Tin eye is a very simple photo recognition system. There are professional photo recognition companies that track copyright photos so that the owners are paid a royalty on the photo.

On a similar topic, how does the Shazam app for the iphone work?

It takes a 10 or 20 second excerpt of a song and identifies it, but it's super fast, and works even if the source is muffled or distorted. I've used it in crowded stores when I like the music they're playing, and it always works for me.
