Hmmm.... "kiss it for luck...".... the first sensible reason I've heard to gamble....

Good "luck" to all,

There's a line in the Casino movie where De Niro character says something along the lines "if they win, we try to keep them playing, because we always get it all and more back in the end." As the Casino manager he shows "the house always wins" in the end, and sort of sees the clients as being tricked by the lights and sounds and excitment to throw away their money.

If you go to the casino for fun, like the movies, and just blow $20 without the plan of winning that's more healthy. I like to go to the track this way and love to see the horses run and have a beer.

I can't believe how many stupid people go to waste their $$$ in casinos. To see blinking lights and lots of people I can go to Canada's Wonderland, or if I want to gamble I an go to any of those illegal Portuguese gamble houses at Ossington, the most I can lose there is $200 bucks in 8 hrs of playing poker, at least I know that a decent person is winning my money and not a blood-sucking casino.

I don't think many people like to be characterized as stupid, so keep your judgemental comments to yourself, alien. I enjoy going to casinos and I enjoy gambling. I am sure I have probably lost more money over the years than I have made, but I still enjoy the experience, and have fun with it. If someone thinks they are going to strike it rich at a casino, then I would agree that is probably misguided (and possibly stupid) thinking, but don't badmouth those who enjoy gambling and have it under control.

Fortunato, “Hmmm.... ‘kiss it for luck’....." actually more of a christening! ;) Claims the luck lasts longer, also claims it works!

Homonger - you took the words out of my mouth... I too enjoy gambling from time to time and quite often my vacations centre around places that are known for their casinos, Vegas (obviously), Nassau, Biloxi and I've always been fairly lucky. I always go with a specific amount of $$ that I want to win - if it's a weekend in Niagara, I'm ecstatic if I'm able to just pay for the weekend (hotel, gas, food & golf) out of the winnings - last summer was awesome, actually, we went away every weekend, Niagara, Barrie, Montreal and technically didn't pay for any of them - thank you casino!! ;)

Cruise - what games were you playing??

Rayven,

My favorite casino experience was in Amsterdam, of all places. I started with 200 guilders at the blackjack table and said to myself, "if I double my money, I am going to leave and go to the brothel across the street". I had the hottest streak I have ever had--blackjacks, doubledowns, splits, it was amazing. I quadrupled my money in about a half hour, and even though I was still hot, I walked away and had a great time across the street with the casino's money.

Unfortunately, I have taken my fair share of lumps playing blackjack in Vegas, but have done pretty well playing in casinos in Indiana, Atlantic City, and New Orleans. Luckily, I like to bet on sports too, so I usually take a break and wander over to the sports book if I am cold at blackjack. It is good way to spend a few hours.

Homonger - I think that's the smartest way to play - if you're up and you've won what you set out to win (and then some), it's time to go - 'cuz if you don't the casino will undoubtedly take their money back!!

I love betting on football (other sports too but I have a knack with football), that's the one thing that I was disappointed with during my vacation in Nassau - the only sports book is at the Crystal Palace Casino - so despite having booked at Atlantis, we spent most of our time at Crystal Palace.

Thank you Fortunato, I think I am too. Alex, I will ask you kindly not to speak of our private affairs!

Cardinal Fang, I actually said "I have a friend..." I did not say 'Sex Toy!' so technically I didn't speak of our private affairs. ;)

Giggling uncontrollably !

Casino Mantra - the odds are the odds are the odds. (the rake)
While it's true that you cannot win long term, most people that enjoy gambling have complete control. It's also true that there are many who will lose everything and then lie, cheat or steal to get more money.

There is a old story about a degenerate gambler who pleads with a friend for a loan to pay the rent otherwise his wife and children will be tossed out on the street. The friend lends him the money but later spots him in a casino playing Blackjack. Demanding an explanation of why he is wagering the borrowed money the gambler responds - "I already had This Money. It was the rent money that I needed".

Nothing sweeter than winning a small sum (under $1,000) and spending it on our hobby! Went to Montreal recently and used the modest winnings to sample some lovely dancers, guilt free (guilt of spending that is...), in a few clubs....

Kept the smile on my face knowing that my original capital was untouched. Control and luck...

The funniest things now about casinos is that now there are people who are suing casino management and the Ontario gov't for their addiction problems. An example, the Former Chairman of HECFI (Hamilton Entertainment Mgmt) is now suing Casino Niagara and the Ontario gov't for his addiction problems. I think the gist of the case is that the mgmt should of stepped in when his gambling was getting out of control but didn't. And I think the gov't was named for allowing casinos in the province in the first place.

Now its true there should be proper guidelines in place to protect the gambler when his/her abuses get out of hand, but I still think the individual should own up to thier own weakness and go seek help.
