Too many cops?

Yesterday, during the snowstorm peak, someone delegated one of Toronto’s finest to traffic control. His job was to hand out tickets to those motorists that turned right on a sign that says “no right turn 4pm-6pm”

Is it me or have we hired so many cops that there is nothing for them to do except traffic control.

Can you imagine a worse job for a guy who joins the police force to try to make a difference in real crime and all he does is bust hockey moms in their minivans….in the middle of a friggin snowstorm.

Notice I did not mention our idiotic mayor even once in this post.

City needs the extra cash to pay for the plows. It's either give out tickets or the rookies get to forage for returnable empties along country roads.

Ah, the good old days when we were young, and in need a a case of beer. I was so pissed when they raised the price to $8.25 for a two four. Mind you, I was really very happy when they went from a nickel to a dime for empties. The university Wall of Empties came down. It took 4 trips with the beer cart to get them into the In and Out.

So true, we made a lot of money collecting stubbies and the pop bottles, there were usually more of them. Two cents for a pop bottle and they were heavy freakin things too.
You don't get that anymore.

If we had better cops, we wouldn't need so many, so there's some incentive for the Police to have less than the best, the same as with most labour unions.

Actually, if we followed the HTA, city bylaws, civil law and abided by the criminal code of Canada we wouldn't need so many cops.

Unfortunately for a so-called civilized country some of us are not very civilized.....

BTW: as for the no right turn ticket they put those up to help control the flow of traffic during peak periods. I know while travelling through the core last summer that due to the high pedestrian traffic, right turns hold up traffic just as bad as left turns now. I know at one intersection I sat through 3 lights due to cars turning left and right at the same time. They basically blocked the intersection and were the only vehicles that made it through.....

Ever seen them use a mounted cop to do this? Funny as hell to see him lean over to ticket a compact car that barely reaced the horse's gut.

Agree with TBoy - the people who usually complain about cops are those breaking the law....Laws that were not made by the cops. They're just doing their job. Its the idiots who can't obey the laws that make it neccessary to post cops in these areas.

IF the intersection was adequately posted I don't see what there is to complain about. If one disagrees with the traffic regulation the resort is to complain to the city, go to meetings, mount a petition drive. After all although the Police Officer has some discretion if you blatantly violate the law right in front of him/her. . .

Today , Police are really just tax generators. Yes, thank goodness they are there when we really need help but so is the EMS, and they don't give you a summons. They may however ask a cop to do so...

I once saw a cop on a bicycle pull some one over. The bike on the kickstand behind the car was hilarious
These bike cops look like the biggest fucking losers in the world. They might as well be doing syncronized swimming in those costumes.

Have you seen the Dennis Leary Lock And Load comedy DVD? He does a segment on bike cops. Farkin' funny.

95% tax generator, 5% crime fighter

The one time they can bring a city government to its knees is to stop giving traffic tickets.

And they will always tell you there are no quotas.

Well, you may laugh at the cops but hey, they're getting paid to ride around the city soaking up the rays in shorts.....kind of like the marine unit: oh yeah, it's such a shitty job, cruising around the harbour in a decent boat, checking out all the hotties.....man, it'd be a lot better to be stuck inside a hot cruiser wearing a bulletproof vest, stuck in traffic dealing with all the idiot drivers.....

It is amusing to read of how some members of this board are able to morally compartmentalize our justice system. Its OK to break some laws but not others?
The thousands of traffic regulations we have in this city need police vigilance 24/7, any one caught gets what they deserve. Please, much of what we see in the minor areas of traffic control are about property values.

That particular intersection is a side-street entering a major artery. Cars were using it as a short-cut through the neighborhood and complaints about traffic led to the present bylaw.

On any given rush hour day including that one this particular street does not contribute to the major artery traffic in any significant way at all. The bylaw is all about property values.

The policing is an easy cash grab, in a cash starved city with too many cops.

I remember when a 24 was $5.50!

A micky of rum was like $3. or something like that.

Bottle pop was 10cents, 2 cents deposit.

There are some errors in your post:
1) What laws are we breaking here? TERB has a rule that if one discusses how to or admits committing a crime, their post will get pulled and they will be banned (or something like that)
2) The neighbourhoods you are talking about have NOTHING to do with property value/devaluation. These no right turns/chicanes, speed bumps (while I admit are a royal pain in the ass except when I'm driving my 4 x 4 lol) they are democracy in action: the people living in those neighbourhoods petitioned their MP and through a voting process, had those speed calming measures put in place. EOS.

For the record, if the people who own the property on that street found that the traffic was too heavy, then more power to them! I personally would hate to have bumper to bumper traffic on my side street pumping out all the toxins. (I used to live in an apartment overlooking the queensway and I couldn't open my window from 3 pm until about 8 because of the exhaust fumes).

As stated, I too find that those that complain most about the cops are the ones who have been caught doing something wrong or are continually doing something wrong and getting caught at it.

BTW: you DO know that you can have those by-laws changed eh? Just have to get enough people together and have the no right turn sign removed at that interesection but unless you live on the street, your chances are slim to none.....

I noticed the same thing. Cops are just everywhere nowadays. In this country one is proscribed from doing so many things.
Yes, there are too many cops around, but this just fits in with the spirit of the place. Don't park here. don't do this. Don't do that.

I am not the biggest fan of cops as I find them to eventually become corrupt because the status quo among colleagues dictates it, or soon after learning the ropes and because there is nobody to police the police, they see how easy it is to get away with things like abuse of power.

They are often hypocritical for the position of trust that they hold but always use the "I'm only human" BS when they get caught abusing it and for this reason I find they hold too much power for just being human like everyoneelse.

In many cases including personal experience and because of the racial and ethnic makeup of the force they are inherently racist not all the time but just one time is too many for a person in a position of trust that's supposed to serve everyone.

The type of idiots we have in society though requires that you have a cop acting on behalf of big brother around before they can follow the rules/laws that were put in place for the greater good of most.

I don't think most might mind traffic duty as much as you may think as it takes them away from the more dangerous aspects of their jobs like being in the line of gunfire or in cases where more brainpower is needed and they either lack the stomach, cognitive ability or training to properly address the situations that may arise like domestic violence and homicide situations.
