Anyone want to guess what are the top three most popular sports in the world?
What's the definition of popular? Most participants? Most fans? Played in most countries? Most revenue generated?

I think it's playability. You can play all of those three sports pretty much without equipment in any location.

I'm some what surprised Cricket isn't one of the top 3. I knew soccer and basketball were the top two.

And the winner is

"The results are shown below. Estimates are directly from the International Sports Federations themselves. The Number of Affiliated National Federations comes from the International Olympic Committee. Only the sports who laid claim to the title of most or second-most popular were included in the study. I left out Auto Racing/F1, who for obvious reasons won't even be comparable in participation numbers to the rest of the sports involved. For your inormation, though, the FIA has 119 affiliated national federations.

Sport
2002 Estimates of Participants Worldwide

Volleyball 998 Million
Basketball 400 Million
Table Tennis 300 Million"

It's hard to believe that volleyball is played by 15-20% of the world's population and 2.5 times as much as the second most popular sport.

?? you make a good point. Although I would not have guessed volleyball was as popular, table tennis is HUGE all over the world especially in China, Korea. I think it is kind of big in Canada, "eh?"

I'm sure these are registered participants who have paidd for somekind of registration. If you count the number who play just for fun, but can't afford to pay a registration fee, soccer is without a doubt the number one sport in the world.

No doubt soccer is popular but one could make the same registration argument with any sport.
