It looks like crap. But then, so do rusty, fading doors as well. And 4 ft tall grass and weeds. It does not justify such a nasty letter.
there are some Toronto by-laws or something against tall grass, you can be fined

Isn't some part of Etob kinda ghettoish like around the old Campbells soup plant? Been a long time since I had any need to go there.

I'm on the fence here.

I don't mind it but then I'm not their neighbor.

And the more I think about it the more I'm inclined to agree that if everybody on the street did this it would look very inner city.

Which would in turn bring down property values.

Friend of mine lives in a very upscale condo in Oakville. They have very strict rules on what you can have on the balconies and the colour of drapes or blinds that each unit can have. The building looks generic as hell but it's value has skyrocketed since he bought it.

Steadily rising in value. Went from the bottom third to the top third in values, living conditions etc of Toronto neighbourhoods by Toronto Life.

North Etobicoke, west Eglinton Corridor, Mid Scarborough, those are the new ghetto areas

Unless you're going to be selling it makes no difference what your property value is. A real estate agent would have to be quite incompetent to not be able to sell a home despite external factors. The silly thing about this anonymous letter is that there are a many other things in the Long Branch area that are quite undesirable. That area was actually undesirable for quite some time. There's a number of industrial business in that area, the Lakeshore West rail line and a large CN rail yard Then there's also a jail and a sewage treatment plant further East near Park Lawn.

A painted garage hardly makes a difference.

I wouldn't want to see that on a garage door in my neighborhood either. Good on the anonymous letter author.

Graffiti, unkempt lawns, low-class renters, and poorly maintained houses spell disaster for a neighborhood. Standards must be observed.

1- It looks ghetto
2- How is this racist???
3- WTF kind of parent tells their kids???

I think the loser is pathetic for painting, then whining, then for some unknown reason exposing their kid to the dispute
A 6 year old does not get the mail as they should not be outside ever without parents
So only way kid knows about this "hateful" letter is if loser parent is psychologically abusing their own kid (and the child abuse I think is a far bigger story than the garage)

HOA's violate private property rights
We don't have HOA's here thankfully. A person should have the right to choose the aesthetic appeal of their own home.

Closest is condo boards.
???
Only ON & BC have specific laws
The other 11 provinces you can have a true HOA if you want
(and even under ON / BC you can easily structure your condo corp to very closely resemble a HOA if that really floated your boat)
An RA or CA are also totally legal, are not condo corps, and can very closely resemble a true HOA

BTW even on a Freehold home you can have very heavy restrictions on what you can and can't do with your front
Newer builds come with all kinds of provisions and warning clauses these days so buyer beware if you plan to do something

The ones I'm talking about are the ones that fine you for not having the right breed of tree on your front lawn, driveway has a few weeds, and actual enforcement security walking around looking for infractions for the "management".

I tore out my postage stamp sized front lawn and rock gardened it. Cut down a garbage tree. The only think I did was have them mark my lines for digging. No approval needed.

My front porch looks like crap and has for about five years. I had other Reno's on the go. So I've put than off. No one is handing me fines.

The only restrictions on the front deal with set backs due to the idiots and monster homes. Looking at the various rebuilds on my street(about 6 property splits, 2 second story adds, and three other tear downs) and the various styles and colour schemes, as well as the older homes and how crappy a few of them look( pre WWII cottage builds) I'd say there is one hell of alot of leeway.

And ya, I can paint my garage door whatever colour I want, add a mural, and the city won't do anything.

As for condos that's a common area thing. And balcony clutter is a danger.

You would be surprised. The parklawn area is now a destination area. Condos with all the amenities, great waterfront park area, close to highway and transit.

And further west past Kipling tons of rebuilds, new townhome developments, small condos. Farm boy went in, other boutique places, even organic vegan.

The area is gentrifying.

The garage door is an outrage, but I could live with that. I draw the line at them slaughtering goats in the back yard.

They're teaching their kids to become offended snowflakes straight out of the womb these days. It's child abuse.

HOA's violate private property rights

I understand there are no private property "rights" in Canada's Constitution.

Aside from that, when you buy into a Condominium Corporation (including non-freehold townhouses) you agree to be bound by and abide by the Rules and other restrictions etc. They are set out in the Declaration, Rules, By-Laws and subsequent amendments to same and you contractually agreed to these conditions prior to buying.

it's their house, they can do with it what they like...I have no problem with this, even if it doesn't appeal to me...its just a garage door,it can always be painted over....as long as my neighbour takes care of their property ie grass etc what's the big deal?

LMAO, These people are getting a little too full of themselves.
Now THIS is a racist garage door.
Yes its taken from that famous systemically racist movie about a culturally xenophobic family and the parents being forced into accepting an uncooth foreigner to marry their daughter....My Big Fat Greek Wedding ( Best line in that movie "My ancestors were writing philosophy when yours were swinging from the trees")
Greeks conquered, enslaved and ruled their part of the world like any other conquerer.
Then the Turks conquered, enslaved and ruled their part of the world like any other conquerer.

Oh I know about the area going upscale. There used to be marine engine plant (Johnson I think) where a bunch of condos are now.

That makes the letter even more dumb. Despite all the factors I already talked about people are still moving into the area. A garage makes no difference.

Like it..... a lot! I don't identify as ghetto.
Thank you! there is some sanity in this world. I agree. jeezes people are all the same, no positivity, just some stars and the moon to make the kids happy. To each their own, their house, they can do whatever they want with it. I feel sorry for the letter writer, took so much effort to write that let alone send it, and being a pussy about it. Its a joke and petty to think someone elses actions could affect them when it doesnt even matter to anyone else. Be more open minded people.

Look at Kleinburg
Not a condo corp no fees
Can NOT paint garage (or even front door)
That IS a HOA
