So a few of my buddies and I will be heading for a week in sunny Havana, Cuba very soon.
Who's been recently and whats the scoop on the ladies there? Nightlife?

We have a flight booked but no hotel yet. Were hoping to find a casa particular once we land.
Advice on nightlife over there and overall recommendations? We speak very little Spanish

Thanks in advance

Since you arent staying at a resort, my only advice to you would be to be careful with your money. Cuba has a "local" peso and a "foreigner" peso...the foreigner peso is called cuban convertible peso. Last time i went $100 canadian got me about $68 peso. The local peso is worth practically nothing. Make sure when you spend money you get convertible peso back

So use foreign peso when buying and get foreign peso in return for change? Should I do the money exchange in Cuba or here?

Not a good idea.

I suggest you either book your first two nights at a legit hotel. The Customs form asks the address where you are staying. Then spend your first day finding a local "guide" who will help you find a chica friendly casa.

Or do your homework before you go. I suggest you google for "Casa con Piscine" in Havana. Rent one of these multi-bedroom casa's . Most are chica friendly

I'd also strongly suggest you read up on the Havana forum on internationalsexguide.info

Do you have a link for the casa? I tried googling it and various Spanish sites came up. I'm not sure if there's a particular one you're referring to

Any particular part of Havana that's more lively than the others?
A lot of the casa's im seeing are in Vedado... Is that a decent place for the nightlife and women?

You cannot do the money exchange here. The only place you can get cuban pesos is in Cuba.

As i said before...cuba has 2 currencies...a local peso and a tourist peso. Tourist pesos are pricey but thats what you are supposed to use. Just be careful when you get your tourist peso (convertible peso is what its called) that when you spend it, you get convertible peso in return. its never an issue at a resort or at the airport...cubans are amazing and friendly people so most wouldnt try to rip you off but 1 convertible peso is like a weeks wage to them.
You need to go to a money exchange at the airport or at a reputable hotel. I cant believe you dont have a place.lined up!

I thought the 10% fee was for American dollars being exchanged only?
Charlotte, are you in Havana?

I'm In Cuba right now. You can't buy Cuban convertible pesos as far as I know outside of Cuba. The govt charges a 10% tax on top of the exchange fee and the exchange rate just FYI. So it's really not a great deal. But the locals will want local money due to the exchange fee. I have no idea if you can get Cuban pesos as a foreigner. Banks will sell you Cuban convertible pesos. One thing I found very dissapointing here so I feel other countries are a better deal without these convertible pesos and extra tax going on.
Charlotte, you cant exchange for any Cuban currency outside of Cuba...wether its the CUC or the Local Peso.

The problem with the convertible peso is that its really meant for tourists at a resort. 1 convertible peso is a LOT of money to a Cuban, which makes using it off resort tricky. Hyru this whole trip of yours seems scattered, and I dont mean to sound rude.

You have a flight and thats all. No residency...no game plan? What do the others in your group say? Do they have any ideas? Cuba is a communist.country...if Prostitution is illegal there then would you really risk it? Plenty of great ladies here in Toronto waiting for you on your return.

Careful at the Havanna airport currency exchange. I got shorted there. The woman was very clever with slight of hand, and I was a bit gullible, thinking that was one place where the supervision would be sufficient to ensure honest.

Canadian money is not well known or has a high currency value. But going to Cuba our dollar should be vastly more than theirs. Yup, everywhere you'll go locals take advantage of tourist.

One of my co-workers went to Cuba and instead of giving our currency for tips, the housemaid got jeans and coloring books for her kids. Poverty is everywhere. Have extra coins and candies from panhandling kids. For Adults well on your knees and blow.

SchlongConery and GPIDEAL have given you most of the information that you need. Try to organize as much as you can from here, you don't want to be running around your first day looking for accommodation, you are more likely to "settle" for something just to have a place.

The Canadian dollar is quite low right now, it costs about $132 to buy 100 CUC, not too long ago it was at par. As suggested above, check your change carefully, even at the cash changing cadeca at the airport, they have tried to rip me off almost every time I visit once by about 40 CUC and are not embarrassed when you catch them. I have been going down for a few years now and still have very few friends I know I can trust. Any one you will meet will be trying to make as much as they can off you, either through commissions at restaurants, taxis, casas, girls or other little "scams".

Due to the influx of tourists wanting to see Cuba before the Americans arrive, it has been busier than usual this year. In turn some accommodation prices are increasing, some restaurants too. Average Cuban wages is about 16 to 20 CUC a month for 40 hour work weeks which means that they get paid about 10 cents an hour in government jobs.

The girls you meet in clubs usually have "drivers" outside who are either their boyfriends or pimps, technically one and the same. I had girls promise me they were single, trying to pretend to be my girlfriend for a bigger payday, only for me to bump into them with their boyfriend/husband. One I knew for years, played cool and never asked for anything from me until January this year. The item was too expensive so I declined and she never responded after I came home. I happened to look up her Facebook this week, she is already engaged and living in Italy! The poor guy, she was probably with me while he was funding her visa and flight etc. thinking she is in love with him.

In the larger private clubs the girls pay as much as a 500 CUC monthly fee to work there, so they usually ask you for 100 CUC and don't stay overnight with you. Then ask for taxi fee and gifts... Just walking down the street you will have dozens of girls approaching you, they might ask for less, but watch your valuables on your person and in your room if you take them home.

Once in a while you get lucky and find a girl who is not a pro, but they all need money either for themselves or family. Just inviting her to "hang out" at your hotel or casa doesn't solve her financial problems. If they are seen even just speaking to tourists, they can be picked up by the police. If they have a prior history of being with tourists, they can end up in jail for a few years. Be careful, not only for your sake, but for the girl's too.

The Fruity Hare and Charlotte have pretty much summed it up. Cuba and Cuban's are now well along into simply looking for any way to fleece tourists. I've gotten the feeling more and more in the past 507 years and have pretty much had my fill of Cuba. It might still be a "deal" in some ways but I hate the feeling of being fleeced.
