Agree, china is the greatest threat. But they have been long before trump 2.0. All the cases i cited earlier for espionage and transational repression preceded trump. This isnt a trump issue like ive stated. It is bipartisan. Many democrats and republicans agree on this issue of countering china.
What you say in general I agree, and china's strategy to catch up to the west was to steal as much IP as they could.
But, given this threat, only Trump attacked his own country's advantages over china so blatantly.

WASHINGTON (NewsNation) — The Trump administration’s effort to revoke visas for Chinese college students has intersected with its legal battles with Harvard University.

As the State Department moves to limit Chinese student visas, the Wall Street Journal has released a report detailing the university’s alleged ties to the Chinese Communist Party, citing the university as a favored institution for China’s political elite.

Chinese Communist elites attended Harvard: WSJ
According to the Journal, a 2014 article from the Shanghai Observer referred to Harvard as the party’s top “overseas party school.”

“If we were to rank the Chinese Communist Party’s ‘overseas party schools,’ the one deserving top spot has to be Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government,” the online platform run by the city’s main party newspaper said.

The report cites a training program from the 2000s called “China’s Leaders in Development.”

Harvard’s website describes the program as designed to help senior local and central Chinese government staff better address China’s “national reforms.”

The report names several high-ranking party figures who have studied at Harvard, including a former vice president of China who attended a training program at the university’s public policy school in 2002, a retired vice premier who received a master’s from Harvard in public administration in 1995, and a current party member who took part in a short-term Harvard program in 1999.

It also claims that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s daughter attended Harvard under an alias in the early 2010s, which was allegedly known to some staff members.

Harvard has not responded to the Wall Street Journal’s report.

A wide range of global leaders — including Canada’s new Prime Minister Mark Carney, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and multiple Taiwanese presidents — have also studied at Harvard.

Judge extends block on international student ban
In federal court, a judge recently extended a block on the Trump administration’s attempt to revoke Harvard’s ability to enroll international students.

The administration has given Harvard 30 days to submit evidence challenging the proposed plan, which would limit international enrollment to 15%.

We can agree or disagree on the methods, but the assessment is correct - that the CCP is the greatest adversarial power we face.

Previous methods of making concessions and trying to keep the CCP accountable on delivering on their promises with the hopes that their society opens up and embraces democracy and free markets has proved highly unsuccessful over and over.

Maybe the methods trump is posing are extreme. Like ive said 90% of chinese students just want to come to the U.S. and look to better their lives with the best education and opportunities. However, the CCP has the ability to leverage these students to act solely in the interest of the party. This is the problem. I see no issue with looking a bit more closely on granting student visas for those studying in critical fields or having any connection to the CCP

I'm not opposed to more screening for those students as you suggest. Particularly for those going into more sensitive fields that might have security implications. So OK with that.
But it's all the other stuff that's hurting efforts v China (and Russia) that concerns me.

The CCP getting their citizens to do their dirty work again...

Chinese Nationals Charged with Conspiracy and Smuggling a Dangerous Biological Pathogen into the U.S. for their Work at a University of Michigan Laboratory
Tuesday, June 3, 2025

U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Michigan
DETROIT – Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, citizens of the People’s Republic of China, were charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy, smuggling goods into the United States, false statements, and visa fraud, announced United States Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon, Jr.

Gorgon was joined in the announcement by Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Detroit Division and Marty C. Raybon, Director of Field Operations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The FBI arrested Jian in connection with allegations related to Jian’s and Liu’s smuggling into America a fungus called Fusarium graminearum, which scientific literature classifies as a potential agroterrorism weapon. This noxious fungus causes “head blight,” a disease of wheat, barley, maize, and rice, and is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year. Fusarium graminearum’s toxins cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock.

According to the complaint, Jian received Chinese government funding for her work on this pathogen in China. The complaint also alleges that Jian’s electronics contain information describing her membership in and loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party. It is further alleged that Jian’s boyfriend, Liu, works at a Chinese university where he conducts research on the same pathogen and that he first lied but then admitted to smuggling Fusarium graminearum into America—through the Detroit Metropolitan Airport—so that he could conduct research on it at the laboratory at the University of Michigan where his girlfriend, Jian, worked.

United States Attorney Gorgon stated: “The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals—including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party—are of the gravest national security concerns. These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a ‘potential agroterrorism weapon’ into the heartland of America, where they apparently intended to use a University of Michigan laboratory to further their scheme.”

“The federal charges announced today against Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu, both residents of the People’s Republic of China, signify a crucial advancement in our efforts to safeguard our communities and uphold national security,” said Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office. “These individuals exploited their access to laboratory facilities at a local university to engage in the smuggling of biological pathogens, an act that posed an imminent threat to public safety. Thanks to the exceptional investigative efforts of the FBI Detroit Counterintelligence Task Force, in close cooperation with U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Field Operations these dangerous activities have been effectively halted. The FBI remains resolutely committed to collaborating with our law enforcement partners to protect the residents of Michigan and defend the United States against such grave threats.”

U.S. Custom and Border Protection, Director of Field Operations Marty C. Raybon stated, “Today’s criminal charges levied upon Yunqing Jian and Zunyong Liu are indicative of CBP’s critical role in protecting the American people from biological threats that could devastate our agricultural economy and cause harm to humans; especially when it involves a researcher from a major university attempting to clandestinely bring potentially harmful biological materials into the United States. This was a complex investigation involving CBP offices from across the country, alongside our federal partners. I’m grateful for their tireless efforts, ensuring our borders remain secure from all types of threats while safeguarding America’s national security interests.”

Jian will be appearing this afternoon in federal court in Detroit for her initial appearance on the complaint.

A complaint is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. Trial cannot be held on felony charges in a complaint. When the investigation is completed, a determination will be made whether to seek a felony indictment.

The FBI and CBP are investigating this case.

U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra spoke at an event on Tuesday organized by the Empire Club of Canada. In conversation with Global Investment Banking at CIBC Capital Markets Vice-Chair Lisa Raitt, he discussed Canada-U.S. relations and indirectly responded to a question about the future of Canadians trying to go to Harvard — including Prime Minister Mark Carney’s daughter Cleo Carney.

The event came after the Trump administration revoked Harvard University’s ability to enroll international students. “They have lost their Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification as a result of their failure to adhere to the law,” said Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Kristi Noem in a post on X . “This administration is holding Harvard accountable for fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus.”

Carney’s daughter is expected to attend Harvard as a first-year to earn a bachelor’s in economics . This was brought up by Raitt, who asked Hoekstra about it on Tuesday near the end of their conversation.

“Any thoughts or any words for Canadians who may be trying to go to Harvard right now, like maybe the prime minister’s daughter?” said Raitt.

“Well, I mean, you know the what the U.S. is doing? OK, we cleaned up the border. We’re now tracking down people who are murderers, thieves and rapists, who are in the country illegally, and doing everything to get them out of the country and make America safe,” said Hoekstra. “When I was on the intel committee, I would get briefed regularly by the FBI about students from China in our universities who are — and our research institutions — who are stealing our technology or our research, sending it back to China. They would patent it before it ever came out of our research institutions.”

He said that U.S. President Donald Trump was “cleaning up that mess.”

“We recognize that American universities, and probably Canadian universities, are phenomenal bastions of knowledge — OK? — that our enemies want to have access to. This is why we have so many foreign students now. They want the knowledge, and in some cases, they want to steal our research,” he explained.

“And so the president is saying, ‘No, we’re going to — we’re going to clean this up.’ We recognize the value of the commodity that we have, which are research institutions. So we still want people coming in, but we want to manage that process.”

He said that the U.S. has been “negligent” and hasn’t managed its resources well.

“We’re being exploited by those who want to destroy the United States and who want to destroy the prosperity and the security of Canada at the same time. They’re not picking and choosing. If they don’t like the U.S., I think there’s a high probability they don’t like you either,” he said.

The fate of international students who are supposed to attend Harvard remains unclear. Most recently, in May, a judge extended an order blocking the Trump administration’s ban on foreign students.

Meanwhile, in a statement on May 29, a university spokesperson said the court decision has allowed it to “continue enrolling international students and scholars while the case moves forward.”

It continued: “Harvard will continue to take steps to protect the rights of our international students and scholars, members of our community who are vital to the University’s academic mission and community — and whose presence here benefits our country immeasurably.”
