I saw an ad for Netflix's new TurboFlix service where you get 5000 more movies and TV shows so I thought that I would check it out for the free trial.

Does anyone know what the word FREE means because it appears that the folks at Netflix do not.

I need to leave my credit card information for a security deposit prior to getting their free trial.

The Netflix scamming continues....

The TurboFlix Setup Wizard will painlessly guide you through the process of getting your Netflix player to connect through TurboFlix.
This will give you the best Netflix experience possible, and add thousands of new videos to your account.
Let’s get started!

......that is the instruction on the setup page.

Turboflix is NOT associated with Netflix. They're a VPN provider.

There reason they say you'll get 1000's of additional Netflix titles is that you can spoof your DNS to make it look like you're travelling to the US, and thereby access US Netflix which has a much larger library than Canadian Netflix.

In fact , Netflix is sending cease and desist orders to these types of companies, and is threatening to crack down on this type of spoofing. They don't want to get in trouble with their content partners who sell them shows/movies for specific geographies only.

I've been hearing its still a legal grey area.
Its against the Netflix user agreement from what I hear (who ever reads those things...), but its not illegal per se.
But if anyone has better info, please update.

Yes - not illegal. You won't go tback jail, or risk a fine from the government.

You MIGHT lose your Netflix privileges - I guess you'd just need to sign up with a different email/credit card.

I also read somewhere that 80%+ of Canadian Netflix subscribers access it via the US. Same thing with Australians.

The content providers (Disney, Sony,Paramount) will make agreements to sell Netflix to users in certain countries. They'll get paid for that - they might also get paid by other outlets (Crave,Shomi, etc) for rights within certain countries. That's why they're pissed off if Netflix users get the stuff for "free", when the cone t providers would poss boy be better off with the users signing up for the local outlet as well.

The contracts aren't public, so tough to know how much the providers are "losing" by Canadians accessing US Netflix.

Not that it answers the issue with Turbo, but in the days of a global internet and effortless digital sharing/copying geographically-restricted copyright is as archaic and unsuited to how the world works as illuminated medieval manuscripts.

Why should 'content-owners' reap any more profit from the consumer than the publisher of a book you bought in New York and brought home to Toronto to read?

There are dozens of these VPN companies around, the one I used was Unblock us, they're great for overriding Netflix's national copyright nonsense, for example Swedish Netflix had the entire library of Bond movies.

I use VPN Express on my IPad which allows me to watch Netflix not only for USA but I can watch Netflix Germany France and UK because this VPN app has servers around the world. Cost is cheap....$6.99 for 30 Gigabytes of Streaming.

Netflix Canada sucks big time and if it wasn't for a VPN I would have cancelled long time ago.

I also have an Android box which is great so I really don't need the Netflix subscription anymore.
