The difference being we have laws against it vs a society and cultural norms that support it.......
I don't seen any laws or cultural norms that support this in Egypt. They are doing this to get around the laws and cultural norms.

Really, you are honestly saying that the situations in Canada and Egypt are comparable!?
I am saying I am not sure. How widespread is this vs how widespread is child prostitution in Canada..the data is not there. I am just saying we should get of our moral high horse

How about the law and cultural norm that states a grown man can marry an 11 year old girl and the "divorce" her when she is done with her?

Probably a law that had some other intentions but is being abused. People marry there at a much younger age then over here.

A grown man can marry a 16-year-old here and do the exact same thing.
Um. We are talking about an ELEVEN year old here....
And parental consent is needed.....something most parents wouldn't give. And definitely not SELL....

Hence the cultural norm arguement. Oh and we tend NOT to sell our children. Even poor people.
I think something about it being AGAINST the law.

You sure about that? The parents consent in Egypt and Thailand, and I'm pretty sure if they were starving here they'd consent too. Look up this sort of thing in the US news sometimes, it happens more than you'd think there.

Wrong. People do it here, poor or not. It's against the law in Egypt too, but those parents still do it. It's a bad situation for the parents and the families, but the people buying are real scum.

Perhaps you can supply a link to a single instance of an 11 year via a broker being
sold for "marriage", then divorced, with parental consent, in Canada.
Oh and no charges laid
And please remember that bountiful bc got busted

you have to be rich to do it?
That depends are you talking about the percentage of your income in Canada or the U.S.A. going to pay alimony and/or child support. Or are you saying that if you are tremendously wealthy it hurts less?

Now for those rich Gulf Arabs visiting Egypt that this thread originally was discussing. . . . .

Look, you even have parents who rape their children, kill them, etc etc. You don't think some junkie parents have allowed their dope dealer to have sex with their daughter for drugs or pimped them out?

And you are equating isolated incidends with something more systemic. There are BROKERS for this. They are lawyers. The marriages are LEGAL. There is no legal recourse. The children are not given protection from this under the law(or if there is something on the books they sure as hell aren't using it). If somethingg like this came to light here the arrests would be legion. Seriously. You can't in any way justify this. At all.

Either you are trolling....or making excuses....which implies support.

Come on Nottyboi, are you honestly attempting to tell us that marriages of convenience of teenage girls with rapid divorces with no financial ramifications, or parents forcing their teenage daughters into sexual relationships they do not wish to be in, are things that society as a whole in Canada or the United States tolerates?

I think Butler ^ probably put this better.

Well how big is it? Systemic or not it happens here to some degree and we are one of the wealthiest nations percapita (#12 vs #101 for Egypt). Extreme poverty drives people to do awful things to survive.

What makes you think society at large accepts it in Egypt?

Nottiboi......if you want to rant rail at western civilisation when ever we look at something like this go ahead. I can't stop you.
But quite simply there is no excuse, no reason you can give to condone the sale into marriage of under-age girls. None. I don't need to get into a long winded debate about this. It is Wrong. It is accepted pedophilia. How do I know we have better thinking in Canada? Easy. We not only prosecute a person if they do it in Canada, we prosecute that person if they are found to be doing it ANYWHERE.
To answer your last bit.....evil may only flourish if good men stand by and do nothing. Which is what is happening in Egypt. Some things should be beyond poverty...the sale of children foremost. How can a nation grow to become civilised if it can't treat ALL of its citizens in a civilized fashion? How can it when it is setting the example to the next generation by selling it?

Go ahead and throw poop at the various adults for screwing up the middle east. There is indeed a lot of fault to go around.
But the children are the hope for a better future....or the continuation of the present.

Which would rather have?
