After the landmark 2023 settlement forcing Fox News to pay Dominion Voting Systems $787 million for disseminating false information about the 2020 presidential election, a similar new court case has just concluded.

The multimillion-dollar settlement came as President Donald Trump continued to make false claims about voting machine fraud.
Forbes (@forbes.com) 2025-08-18T15:05:03Z
This time, conservative TV network Newsmax is being forced to pay a hefty sum, as it is also accused of intentionally spreading false claims about Dominion’s voting machines during the same election.

Newsmax has agreed to pay Dominion Voting Systems $67 million in installments over three years, far less than the $1.6 billion claimed in the original complaint in 2021.

Newsmax explained that it had agreed to a settlement on the grounds that it would not have received a fair trial, while continuing to deny that its reporting had been defamatory.

In September 2024, the channel had already reached a similar agreement with Smartmatic for $40 million.

It’s also worth remembering that three close Trump allies have been sued for defamation by Dominion Voting Systems: Rudy Giuliani, whose proceedings have been suspended due to bankruptcy and no trial date has been set, Sidney Powell, who reached an out-of-court settlement in June 2024 for a confidential amount.

Mike Lindell, sentenced in June 2025, was forced to pay $2.3 million.

After FOX News, it’s Newsmax’s turn to pay in the Dominion case

U.S. District Judge John Bates confessed that his hands are tied after President Donald Trump pardoned everyone involved in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

On Thursday, the judge authorized a $2,200 refund to a Jan. 6 attacker who had her felony conviction dropped after receiving a pardon, according to Politico legal reporter Kyle Cheney.

Yvonne St. Cyr had appealed her conviction when the pardon came through. So, she was entitled to a return of the restitution she was ordered to pay.

“Sometimes a judge is called upon to do what the law requires, even if it may seem at odds with what justice or one’s initial instincts might warrant,” said Bates, who was appointed by George W. Bush. “This is one such occasion.”

Cyr has been unapologetic, telling Bates at her sentencing that she still believed she "did the right thing" while she egged on other rioters as they beat police near her.

“Upon vacating St Cyr’s conviction, the D.C. Circuit [Court of Appeals] did not determine that St Cyr is innocent of the crimes for which she was convicted. Nor has this Court done so,” Bates continued. “But, because of the vacatur and subsequent dismissal, the law presumes that she is innocent. As a result, the government has no right to retain St Cyr’s $2,270, which the law deems always hers.”

Cyr is the first of the Jan. 6 attackers to have the funds returned.

same as TDS who can't see any good with border security, no tax on tips and seniors benefits, can't see the benefit of deploying national guard to combat crime. can't see the benefits of bringing back Big Auto plants in the US... just whine and cry...the meltdowns are glorious....waking up to the smell of a meltdown...can't beat that feeling...
First, the "border security" was ---wait for it---- Trumped up. Yes, there were a lot of undocumented, but statistically, they made up a small portion of crime...Which was the main reason Trump and MAGA wanted them gone. But, you ignore the big picture for sure, because these folks are statistically less likely to commit crimes, but also do the jobs most Americans don't want. And, they pay billions in taxes for services they CANNOT use. Social Security, Medicare etc.

As for the no tax on seniors benefits, the number of seniors who qualify is not that large...and, to add insult, it only lasts until 2028. That doesn't sound like a good faith tax cut. I mean, why are the tax cuts for the wealthy 2030?

The National Guard is not a police force. They are a military presence. Why would ANYONE want to have the military on the streets of a US city? That's something banana republics do, which makes sense on why Trump did it. Here's a good analogy: The national guard are like not very good firefighters. They've knocked down a fire, but have not touched the source. So, for a while, it looks like they did a good job, nothing's burning. But, shortly after they leave, the fire gets some air and, boom, another massive fire. Now, where this analogy fails is that Washington wasn't a war zone. It has problems, and crime. But Trump and his cronies are not dealing with the root causes. So, once the restrictive force goes, it'll be business as usual.

And, of course, you ignore the major economic issues that Trump is ratcheting up. His tariffs represent the largest tax hike on Americans in decades, if not years. The average family is going to pay nearly $3,000 more this year because of this. And, the worst part is, Congress didn't approve or vote on this.

So, yeah, post Nick Cage looking like he has no care in the world. That's you. But only because you are in a cult and Dear Leader says things are going swimmingly...If you had the capacity to think critically, you would realize the situation...

Nice try down playing everything he did...
as oppose to what Biden did which was zero on crime? Immigration (made it worse) and no. illegal immigrants don't pay taxes as well as those who employs them...they have zero records, using other peoples Social security number is also rampant. why do you support it so much? there are channels for them to go through that will make them legal...this is why democrats will keep losing because of the mindset you have...and if you don't get your way, you throw a tantrum....

The National Guard presence isn't Martial Law...Trump didn't declare it...they are there to assist law enforcement, they are not rounding up citizens and impose curfew, obviously you know nothing about Martial Law, just what the democrats feed you...

Your claims as usual are opinions not facts.

Silly little cultist and his inability to google...

As for crime under Biden:
Joe Biden is correct that violent crime is near a 50-year low

Could you please tell me where I said the National Guard was operating under Martial Law? I know reading it tough. And there is so much of it. But, maybe you could actually read what I post instead of jumping into right-wing talking points that you're parroting from someone who might be a lot smarter than you.

Joe Can't even tell what day it is yet you believe what he says?
So why is it a bad thing having the national guard when the local law enforcement is failing on crime?

Silly cultist cannot accept facts or think critically. Colour me shocked.

Nice job trying to move the goalposts or changing your argument... The National Guard is not a police force. And, crime rates (according to Trump's own FBI) are declining. If Trump was really worried about crime, why hasn't he addressed some of the red states that lead the nation in crimes per capita? And, as I said, once the National Guard leaves, things will return to normal. There will still likely be violent crime like EVERY US CITY, homelessness and people with mental illness/addictions.

As mentioned in other posts, one way to manipulate Trump is to blow smoke up his ass. If you can make it look semi-sincere, you're more than halfway to getting what you want. But, as repeatedly mentioned, this stunt (and it is a stunt) will do nothing to stop crime from happening. There will still be poverty, homelessness and addiction in DC, and in most parts of the US.

So what democrats do is just lie then? Kinda hypocritical if you support it and call Trump a liar...

and keep living in reality... Where Trump is the POTUS...I know you wake up everyday upset just because of it... you shouldn't live your life like that... Trump shouldn't be the focus of your everyday life...but I guess he lives rent-free in your head...

Believe me, Trump is not my focus. And, I do live in reality. One with verifiable facts and a place where many people know how to be critical thinkers. Unlike the cultists, who believe Trump and his lies. So, yeah, you can keep enjoying the wind in your hair like Cage in that gif, and be joyously ignorant about what's really going on.

I don't understand why you're so hung up on Trump...and you get mad at people who support his policies
Policies:
-lower crime
-bring back companies to the US
-secure border
-ban men on women's sports and bathrooms
-deport illegal immigrants
-broker peace talks
Why are his policies bad again? the wind in my face is just the bonus...

President Donald Trump scored a win in his efforts to cut overseas funding when a federal appeals court panel cleared his administration to withhold $2 billion in foreign aid. The decision reversed a lower court’s ruling requiring funding and payments to keep flowing following Trump’s controversial order for a pause on foreign aid payments that he issued on his first day in office. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) was among the first federal agencies Trump and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — once headed by billionaire Elon Musk — moved to slash.

What happened

In the wake of the president’s overseas funding pause at the start of his second term, two nonprofits sued, arguing Trump exceeded his authority by essentially abolishing USAID and cutting spending that had been approved by Congress. In response, District Judge Amir Ali, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden, in February issued a temporary restraining order — which the administration began fighting, leading a panel of judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to lift Judge Ali’s order.

A spokesperson from the White House Office of Management and Budget praised the appeals court panel’s decision, crediting the ruling with stopping “radical left dark money groups” from “maliciously interfering with the president’s ability to spend responsibly and to administer foreign aid in a lawful manner in alignment with his America First policies.”

What the judges said

The 2-1 appeals court panel’s ruling is based on what a judge said was the plaintiffs’ lack of standing in the case. By: Bermix Studio on Unsplash© Knewz (CA)
The appeals court panel’s decision was 2-1. In the majority opinion, Judge Karen Henderson — who was appointed by former President George H.W. Bush — said the plaintiffs lacked standing to bring a case against the Trump administration. “The district court erred in granting that relief because the grantees lack a cause of action to press their claims,” she wrote. According to Henderson, only the Government Accountability Office, which is a congressional watchdog agency, had standing to push back on Trump’s order to withhold funding. She was joined in the majority by a Trump appointee, Judge Gregory Katsas.

Dissenting opinion

The appeals court panel judge who dissented warned that the president’s funding freeze could lead to “tyranny.” By: ZUMAPRESS.com / MEGA© Knewz (CA)
The third judge on the panel, Biden appointee Florence Pan, issued a dissenting opinion in which she called the funding freeze “unlawful.” According to Judge Pan, “The court’s acquiescence in and facilitation of the executive’s unlawful behavior derails the carefully crafted system of checked and balanced power that serves as the greatest security against tyranny — the accumulation of excessive authority in a single branch.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal appeals court on Friday blocked President Donald Trump's plans to end protections for 600,000 people from Venezuela who have had permission to live and work in the United States, saying that plaintiffs are likely to win their claim that the Republican administration's actions were unlawful.

A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously upheld a lower court ruling that maintained temporary protected status for Venezuelans while TPS holders challenge actions by Trump’s administration in court.

The 9th Circuit judges found that plaintiffs were likely to succeed on their claim that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had no authority to vacate or set aside a prior extension of temporary protected status because the governing statute written by Congress does not permit it. Then-President Joe Biden’s Democratic administration had extended temporary protected status for people from Venezuela.

“In enacting the TPS statute, Congress designed a system of temporary status that was predictable, dependable, and insulated from electoral politics,” Judge Kim Wardlaw, who was nominated by President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, wrote for the panel. The other two judges on the panel were also nominated by Democratic presidents.

In an email, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security blasted the decision as more obstruction from “unelected activist” judges.

“For decades the TPS program has been abused, exploited, and politicized as a de facto amnesty program," the email read. “While this injunction delays justice and undermines the integrity of our immigration system, Secretary Noem will use every legal option at the Department’s disposal to end this chaos and prioritize the safety of Americans.”

Congress authorized temporary protected status, or TPS, as part of the Immigration Act of 1990. It allows the secretary of DHS to grant legal immigration status to people fleeing countries experiencing civil strife, environmental disaster or other “extraordinary and temporary conditions” that prevent a safe return to that home country. The terms are for six, 12 and 18 months.

The appellate judges said the guaranteed time limitations were critical so people could gain employment, find long-term housing and build stability without fear of shifting political winds.

But in ending the protections soon after Trump took office, Noem said conditions in Venezuela had improved and it was not in the U.S. national interest to allow migrants from there to stay on for what is a temporary program. It's part of a broader move by Trump’s administration to reduce the number of immigrants who are in the country either without legal documentation or through legal temporary programs.

U.S. District Judge Edward Chen of San Francisco found in March that plaintiffs were likely to prevail on their claim that the administration had overstepped its authority in terminating the protections. Chen postponed the terminations, but the Supreme Court reversed him without explanation, which is common in emergency appeals.

It is unclear what effect Friday’s ruling will have on the estimated 350,000 Venezuelans in the group of 600,000 whose protections expired in April. Their lawyers say some have already been fired from jobs, detained in immigration jails, separated from their U.S. citizen children and even deported.

Protections for the remaining 250,000 Venezuelans are set to expire Sept. 10.

“What is really significant now is that the second court unanimously recognized that the trial court got it right,” said Emi MacLean, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU Foundation of Northern California representing plaintiffs.

She added that while the decision might not benefit immediately those people who have already lost their status or are about to lose their status, Friday's ruling “should provide a path for the administration’s illegal actions related to Venezuela and TPS to finally be undone.”

A court declaration provided by plaintiffs showed the turmoil caused by the Trump administration and Supreme Court decision.

A Washington woman who worked in restaurants was deported in June along with her daughters, 10 years and 15 months old, after ICE officers told her to bring her children to an immigration check-in. The father of the baby, who is a U.S. citizen, remains in the U.S. while the woman tries to figure out what to do.

Also in June, a FedEx employee appeared in uniform at his required immigration check-in only to be detained, the court declaration states. He slept for about two weeks on a floor, terrified he would be sent to El Salvador's notorious CECOT prison. His wife cannot maintain the household on her earnings.

“I am not a criminal,” he said in the declaration, adding that “immigrants like myself come to the United States to work hard and contribute, and instead our families and lives are being torn apart."

Millions of Venezuelans have fled political unrest, mass unemployment and hunger. Their country is mired in a prolonged crisis brought on by years of hyperinflation, political corruption, economic mismanagement and an ineffectual government.

Attorneys for the U.S. government argued the Homeland Security secretary’s clear and broad authority to make determinations related to the TPS program were not subject to judicial review. They also denied that Noem's actions were motivated by racial animus.

But the appellate judges said courts clearly had jurisdiction in cases where the actions were unlawful. They declined to address whether Noem was motivated by racial animus.

I know you wanted to call Trump racist and bigot so hard...you just can't because he's not.
I actually agree with you on this point Trump could care less if your black white brown or yellow. The only colors he cares about are green and orange. Doesn't matter if your a terrorist, mass murderer or fraudster. Shoot him a couple million and you are a great person. Unfortunately black people are generally on the lower end of the social economic totem pole so they are of no use to TACO

how is he a racist? how is he a bigot...you can make the list but i can tell it's flawed so why bother right? Anyone with critical thinking could tell one has TDS...I can tell...
Backing the kkk and letting them out of jail might be one reason, kicking black people out of his fathers apartment buildings might be another, calling kkk good people might be yet another. Calling countries with black people shitholes might yet be another. Demanding Washington rename their team redskins and Cleveland Indians might yet be another example of racism
