Using a Laptop as a GPS system

The newer or up to date versions of the 'Magellan' Explorist is the same size but shorter in length and the PC cable is now 'USB' which is pretty much standard nowadays!

With the advances in wireless laptops are they good enough to be used as a handheld GPS. It seems a good GPS cost $500-700 and a good laptop only a couple hundred more. So it would seem a laptop can do all a GPS does plus you have a PC also, even though it's not as small as the portable GPS.
As long as you have acess to a wi-fi zone and plan accordingly, could a laptop replace a handheld GPS?

On a recent long road trip to the states had a USB GPS device plug into my laptop using MS Streets and Trips. Had the laptop pluggd into one of those AC Converters into the lighter. Didnt have to worry about battery life, and the GPS was a lifesaver! Dead accurate. And with MS S&T we could even plan out fuel economy, food, and lodging.
