Despite witnessing a Toronto chef carve and eat a deer leg in the window of his restaurant as they protested outside, a group of determined animal rights activists will be returning to deliver their message again.
A group of activists are organizing a “peaceful demonstration” outside of Antler Kitchen & Bar on Saturday evening beginning at 7:15 p.m.
“We're gathering for a peaceful demonstration outside this restaurant that still thinks killing animals can be humane,” according to a description on Facebook of the event organized by Toronto Animal Rights March. “Please join us to let everyone know that no animal wants to be killed and eaten.”

Antler, located in the city’s west end, is known for serving meat. The small restaurant has come under fire from vegan activists in recent months, for its menu which includes foie gras, the fattened liver of a goose or duck, as well as game meat such as wild boar, venison and bison.
After a March 23 protest at the restaurant made international headlines when Antler’s co-owner and chef Michael Hunter butchered some deer and ate it in plain view of the protesters, they are now hoping to “build on the momentum.”

Photos and video of the event circulated widely online with many praising the chef for his response to the protesters. In fact, reservations at the restaurant have been filling up with only wait list spots available for the next couple of weeks, according to Antler’s

Love this story.

I tried booking when the protests were happening, but it was wait list only until after I left the country.

I want to believe these protestors are being paid by the owner. This is best press coverage I imagine he could imagine.

WARMINGTON: Restaurant protest not so wild after all

Animal rights protesters went hunting to stop the serving of wild meat but in the end it was them who got gamed.

“Rather than bow to the vicious online backlash, organizer Marni Jill Ugar is leading another protest tonight at Antler,” said the news release.

Toronto Police even had five officers on hand.

Two dozen protesters, some with TV screens showing video footage of wild animals being slaughtered, lined the sidewalk in front of the restaurant with their placards with slogans like “Animals lives are not ours to take.”

The media were there, ready and waiting. The stage was set for a showdown.

It turned out to be a giant dud.

Antler Kitchen & Bar at 1454 Dundas St. W., near Dufferin St., was busier than it has ever been.

The place was so jammed, even people with reservations couldn’t get in to enjoy chef Michael Hunter’s tasty entrees.

“He is busy,” Ugar said of the irony. “We had communicated about sitting down and doing a menu change, but all this publicity put him on the map — he now hasn’t responded.”

Why would he? The more protests, the more customers!

Not only will Crusted Rack of Deer, Game Burgers and Wild Boar Lumpia stay on the menu, he may need to source even more of it.

Oops. Seems the animal rights crowd may have missed their target or even shot themselves in the foot?

Thanks to Hunter carving a deer leg to combat his critics, the place has become world famous.

Wanting to take his girlfriend out to the wildest place in town, Max Gong decided on Antler.

It was date night for the 25-year-old Bay Streeter and his architectural student girlfriend, Justine Wu, 23.

“I wanted to take her some place special,” he said. This special place had cameras, police and protesters out front.

“No one bothered us when we went in,” said Max. And inside “they treated us great.”

But how about the controversial food?

“It was fantastic,” said Wu. “I ordered the Game Burger, which is a combination of bison and deer and boar. It was delicious.”

Gong had the venison.

“I always wanted to try deer,” he said. “The whole meal was terrific.”

The curtains were drawn but diners were aware of what was going on outside.

“It didn’t bother us much, but I don’t think it’s fair these people are out there,” said Gong. “It’s trying to stop a little business. There are a lot of other places that serve meat. I don’t understand.”

There are First Nations and ethnic stores, markets and eateries that also delve into wild meats, so why always this guy?

“This has nothing to do with First Nations,” said Ugar.

Co-organizer Jenny McQueen said it had everything to do with “speciesism.”

That was a new word for me.

“It’s like racism or sexism,” said McQueen, who feels eating animals is akin to participating in those kinds of unacceptable practices.

But counter protester Nicole Van Delden said what’s unacceptable is what the protesters were doing.

She was holding a sign that read: “Self righteus (sic) pricks.” That it was spelled incorrectly, she said, had more to do with the cold and her spontaneously preparing it.

It got some laughs from those driving by yelling for the protesters to “go home.”

But it also got some biting comments: “This woman is wearing a wolf around her neck,” one protester said, commenting on Van Delden’s winter coat.

“It’s coyote,” she responded. “There’s nothing wrong with it.”

Who’s wrong, she said, are the protesters “harassing a small business.”

By the number of people in for a wild meal at Antler, it clearly isn’t working.i

I will tried go for lunch and try the burger for lunch it cheaper then dinner and plus hopefully no lineup!

Game Burger made with Wild Boar, Bison, Deer... Can't wait to taste that burger!

It sounds so delicious:

At Antler the goal is to serve innovative Canadian cuisine with entrees such as Spice Ash Crusted Rack of Deer, and a Game Burger made with Wild Boar, Bison, Deer; Pastas such as Pappardelle with Braised Rabbit, Buttered Leeks, Verjus Apricot Preserve and Parmesan Cheese; and appetizers like Wild Boar Lumpia, and Chanterelle Mushroom Tarte Tatin.

We celebrate the wild culinary delights of Canada by serving our cocktails using foraged ingredients, house made nose to tail charcuterie platters, and on occasion, cook game meats over an open fire pit, in true rustic style.

I’m hoping to get a reservation, but I’m in more of a rush to get out to try the seal at http://www.kukum-kitchen.com/menu/

I’ve had seal a few times when I’ve been in the North, and I wouldn’t usually rush out to have it again, but I’ve heard really good things about their meals.

Their protests have increased business. In protesting meat meals they can dish it out, so to speak, but they sure went hissy fit when the owner took a a little jab at them by carving venison in full sight. Precious little idiots.

I think we should napalm a cabbage field :)

“Please join us to let everyone know that no animal wants to be killed and eaten.”
Really ... ? Animals may not be fans about getting killed but they are particularly offended by the treatment of their carcasses after death ?

Carnivores are a necessary balance in nature - to suggest that their victims would like the opportunity to chose their fate is ludicrous and in nature - a disaster. Look at what happens to invasive species without a natural predator for balance eg: Rabbits in Australia, African bees in the Americas, tiger clams, etc. They spread unchecked and kill native species. A world of vegetarians would create endless suffering - much, much more than a world with carnivores.

Further more (ladies and gentlemen of the jury) - let's look a little closer at that nice steak that IM469 is eating. Was that meat part of a living cow ? Yes ! Was that cow born and bred specifically to end up on IM469's plate ? Yes ! If vegetarians had their way - there would be no cattle bred and the lives of over 12,000,000 cows (Canada) would vanish. As the over sensitive misguided vegetarians will quickly concede - each of these cows have feelings. They were part of life - they were born, had parents, felt the air fill their lungs and played with other youngsters. While their lives as adults ended quickly and probably with less pain than their human counterparts - they at least lived !

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury - I put it to you that vegetarians are putting the wrong questions to these cows. The question looking into those deep brown eyes is - 'do you prefer the opportunity to experience life with a predetermined ending or never to experience life at all ? Of course the cows will choose life over the cold oblivion offered by vegetarians. We carnivores offer and celebrate life !!! We want the cows to experience life and then at the end of life - after oblivion occurs - the cow's life is celebrated yet again as a delicious medium rare slowly cooked gift that gives reason to celebrate life with each delicious bite !

The defense of the meat-eaters rests.

Considering many animals out there (even the ones considered "smart") live like smelly slobs, may kill their own litter, act in cannibalism, and can sometimes eat their own shit; I don't think too many animals give death much of a thought.

What's amazing about those videos isn't the weight loss or malnourishment. If you eat poorly balanced diets with foods low in calories, you're going to lose weight.

But what is amazing is that these people become skeletons with scaly skin and disintegrating teeth and somehow and some reason don't change.

Crazies.

I hope when I die, I'm still able minded to my last breath, and don't live the second half of my life as a moron.
