Terb: Come for the escort listings, stay for the stormfront rantings!

Forgive me if I'm being overarching in assuming that most detractors of immigration and Syrian refugees on here are of the caucasian race? Imagine if Asian (Oriental or EI) Canadians spoke about white Canadians the way whites talk about black folks and other minorities. Asians could point at how whites compare to Asians in violence, divorce rates, incarceration rates, in education, in income. We could call your kids thugs. Imagine if every time a white person underwent a tragedy you heard Asians mentioning white on white crime and white dropouts.

From the son of Ugandan refugees, I truly feel sorry for you folks. The Canadian government chartered commercial planes to rescue my parents and 7,000 others. These people and their children went on to become doctors, lawyers and engineers while contributing to Canadian society and culture for over 40 years.

I agree with SOME of what you have said,...but you left out one important factor,...RELIGION,...

And second,...DO NOT CALL ME A RACIST,...the fact is,...Caucasians are NOT the most racist,...far from it.

I don't really care to call any one group racist. Everyone has biases and prejudices that colour how they see the world (pun intended). The leader of the KKK is caucasian and christian and so too were the family that my parents stayed with for 4 months when they arrived as refugees.

All I was doing with the Asian/White comparisons was trying to point out how some of the expressed views of refugees/immigrants can be turned around, depending on the perspective of the group.

As for religion, care to guess the religion of the perpetrators of Canada's most bloody terrorist incident?

You do realize your statements are incredibly racist.

Any reasonably intelligent person is against violence from any race. In addition, any reasonably intelligent person realizes there are economic and cultural reasons for why some groups, not necessarily defined by race, have issues. In addition, racism really knows no color. You would be amazed at what some "minorities" openly say about those around them, when they think you do not understand their language.

I think if you really want to solve the problem beyond a knee jerk reaction, time to get civilized and put more thought behind it than "gotta be the caucasians holding things back".

I think your sorrow is misplaced. Better to feel sorry for the people who still live in Uganda: one of the most corrupt, impoverished, and intolerant places on earth. It is great some of their best and brightest were able to immigrate here. We really do not want their worst though.

The point I was trying to make is that:

a) All groups can be compared favourably and unfavourably to groups. I used that particular comparison because I assumed most people here opposed to Syrian immigration are caucasian.
b) Canada has stepped in during past humanitarian crises (eg. Asian expulsion in Uganda, Vietnam boat people) to help take large groups of refugees. Are we arguing that those were mistakes?
c) The Canadian government could have easily taken in more people than it has if it showed the same willingness to do so that past Canadian governments have.

Who's saying anything about taking the worst? Any reasonably intelligent person is against taking a country's worst people during a humanitarian crisis. Any reasonably intelligent person is also against using the spectre of 'bringing the worst' to block any movement of people. Or are we saying that Syrians and by extension Muslims/Islam or people from that region are the worst?

And then in the early 90's the refugee system became a farce of bogus claims clogging the system. That is why Chretien tightened the rules and starting using the UN to pre vett the applicants. On average we take in about 14,000 per year about half with sponsorship and half gov't sponsored.

It is now similar to the adoption process, with a home study to ensure the sponsor(s) can handle taking care of the applicants.

I appreciate your family came over and contributed. I hate to say it but it sounds like we did indeed take the cream of the crop. What happened to the farmers and others?

I'm not sure where you think we have failed in this. We set up a system to get people over, assimilate them without due hardship to the nation. As much as the gov't has an obligation to help it has a greater obligation to its citizens.

BTW. Have you and your brethren sponsored anyone in the last forty years?

No. But we have a controlled vetting process now in conjuction with the UN. And it takes time.

Yes, my father sponsored his two brothers and their families to come after they were initially sent to India. We also had a family from Somalia stay with us for two months in the 90s.

Not sure how my actions or inactions are germane to the discussion at hand though.

For those who may not be aware, the majority in "racist" Toronto are visible minorities. Since when has due process and due diligence (Canada is a nation of laws) been confused with racism? The vast majority of immigrants to Canada in recent years have been "white" people from China, India, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc.

The East Indians were, apparently, quite successful in Uganda and also, apparently, non-violent folks. It is no wonder they are also successful in Canada although some people complain about their BO and that they are cheap.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indo-Canadian_organized_crime

"The 17-year-old killed last week was not so fortunate.

He was buried Friday, a week after he and three Filipino friends walked past a group of Indo-Canadian teenagers who allegedly called out racial slurs.
There was a chase and the victim, apparently the slowest in the group, was caught and beaten with a blunt object. He died hours later in hospital."
