“A struggle ensued on the stairs and the suspect punched an officer in the face and head-butted an officer,” Riley said in an email Thursday night. “The officers and the suspect then tumbled down the stairs, where the suspect punched an officer in the face.”
“For their efforts, they were spat on, attacked, thrown down a flight of stairs, and one police officer nearly had his ear ripped off,” Lynch tweeted Thursday night. “None of that assault was shown in the partial video circulating online, because the pro-criminal crowd doesn’t want you to know how truly dangerous the subways have become—even for police officers.”
There is video police released as well that doesn’t show much but does show in the corner of one cut, an officer on the ground, punching up and sideways as if a person is somewhat overtop of him.

This is why police need body cams. It protects all parties from the aftermath comes with these types of video.

Suspect resisted being escorted out of subway by spitting at officer, that's assault on police, he then attacked officers.

Good arrest.

These situations are always going to exist and there is no silver bullet for resolving them. You're dealing with:

1) Human nature - when you're assaulted and humiliated, your instinct to retaliate kicks in. Spit on a cop...don't think he won't respond in kind.
2) Mental health - some of the people cops deal with have mental illnesses so they will behave in ways that are not normal - like not following simple commands to stop resisting arrest. Sometimes restraint is needed for but this is not an easy call all the time.
3) Punching Bag - we don't want to go back to the old days when cops could brutalize people without accountability, but we don't want them to be seen as punching bags either, because people will use them as punching bags if they know they can get away with it

These incidents are dynamic and fluid, and dangerous. Cops have to protect the public and themselves against criminals.

That said, the punches were unnecessary, but understandable.

I've been to NYC many times but not recently. I think the vast majority of police (and fire) are still Irish and Italian. Someone would have to be an idiot and/or insane to get into a mano a mano physical confrontation with them.

Why so NYC police are Irish, you ask?
