:confused:This is really confusing. How much Vitamin D is enough? I seen recommended daily dosage range from 600 I.U. to 4,000 I.D. Also, is it possible to "overdose" on Vitamin D?

Birth to 12 months 400 IU
Children 1–13 years 600 IU
Teens 14–18 years 600 IU
Adults 19–70 years 600 IU
Adults 71 years and older 800 IU
Pregnant and breastfeeding teens and women 600 IU

Would like to add that the sun provides vitamin D but in the winter not so much.

i read some article about vitamin d deficiency in north america and it said that about 90% of black people on the continent are vitamin D deficient because they have so much melanin which hinders vitamin d synthesis.

as soon as the clocks get reset in the fall i start on vitamin d supplements, jamieson makes 1000IU chocolate flavoured chewable tablets... theyre great!

I take it only in the winter, once the sun comes back in April I stop.

Good question how much, nobody really knows, lol. Around 1,000 many think should be enough and not too much.

I think it is important to take and can help prevent some cancers.

I believe the danger in over-dosing yourself with one vitamin is that it can drive out other vitamins. I have seen this posted in regards to Vitamin C (because people seem to think that drowning in it changes the duration of a cold or somesuch) so I'm not sure if the same would apply to Vitamin D.

Shoot, are you allowed to say this about Black people? Doesn't sound very nice to say that they are deficient in Vitamin D.

Yes, it can be confusing! I have been taking 50,000 ui of vit D every day for a few months (BUT i don't absorb vit D). I've been told up to 20,000 a day is best as long as you also take vit A, calcium and magnesium for absorption. I get my blood levels checked every 3 months (there is a test for vit D) and have always been low until now. Perhaps go to your doctor and get a vit D blood test and take it from there? GOOD luck sugar! Hugz, Tristan

The proper level of vitamin d would be the default level set by our ancestors.Every cell in our bodies have vit d receptors and over 2000 genes are controlled by vit d.It is a critical nutrient. So just like we need X # of heartbeats,X # of breaths and X # of calories from a variety of different sources we need X amount of vit d.The average human living outdoors, when we were in a sunny time of the year or a sunny part of the world made between 5-10,000 iu's a day. This depends on your age, skin type, the amount of skin exposed, the strength of the sun and of course the total time spent in the sun.

You also have to watch the supplements.Independent test showed varying levels of vit d in supplements. The best are the liquid drops.Although studies by a very reputable vit d researcher by the name of Micheal Hollick showed that supplemental vit d only circulated in our bloodstream for 60 % of the time that your own naturally produced via uv light vit d .I would trust my own body to make it instead of supplements. He says that using tanning beds is also an excellent method of producing vit d.Up to 20,000 units from a single visit.

Your body absorbs only a certain amount of Vit D... the possiblity of overdosing on it is hard. Your body uses what it need and flushes the rest... get blood tested for the defincency, then do the sensible thing and take what is needs.
1,000 - 2,000 i.u. is a good point for most Canadians in the winter is apropriate. I have jamieson's 1000IU chocolate flavoured chewable tablets. And I second that they tast great! Though there is this new liquid dropper thing you can buy. All you need with that product is a drop a day.
