Volunteers protecting the fox family living under the boardwalk on Woodbine Beach are standing-down after enduring threats and verbal abuse from some members of the public.

The Toronto Wildlife Centre said a volunteer patrolling the boardwalk was threatened by a person with a knife, and in another instance, a teen volunteer was chased by a man.

As a result, the centre said Monday was the last day the volunteers will be safeguarding the foxes.

“Understandably, the city doesn’t have the resources to provide police officers on scene 16-plus hours per day, seven days per week, to protect our committed volunteers,” TWC said in a statement Monday. “But as an organization, despite our deep concern for the fox family, the safety and well-being of our volunteers is paramount. As a result of these serious concerns, we have made the difficult decision to conclude the presence of our volunteers on site.”

The centre said they had 58 volunteers contribute close to 1,500 hours over the past month guarding the fox family.

But the centre added the young foxes are also growing up and venturing farther away from the den.

As the foxes get older, it’s time for their volunteers to move on too, the centre said.

“We’re now turning to compassionate members of the community and anyone else who visits the Woodbine Beach area to provide the best environment for the beloved fox family,” they said.

People hate animals. I was confronted and threatened by folks in my own downtown neighbourhood for leaving a crust of bread out for the squirrels.

Depends where one lives. Where I live, people love raccoons. I think there are more raccoons than humans in my area. A few coyotes as well. Bears, moose, deer, etc.

no they don't hate animals. feeding animals will cause many problems. in subway and bus stations you always see signs that say do not feed the pigeons

Feeding wildlife can lead to a number of serious problems:

Human food is not healthy for wild animals, and they do not need food from humans to survive. Wild animals have specialized diets, and they can become malnourished or die if fed the wrong foods. Also, animals cannot distinguish food from wrappers or foil and can get sick eating these items.

Feeding leads to public health concerns. Too many animals in one place increases the chance of disease transmission to people and among other wildlife.

Animals accustomed to people often lose their fear of people and can become aggressive. Those that become too aggressive may have to be destroyed to protect people and property.

Birds gathering near or on airports can become victims of bird-aircraft collisions, potentially causing flight delays, damage to aircraft, and loss of human life.

Animals fed along roads tend to stay near roads, increasing the chance of vehicle-animal accidents.

Large concentrations of ducks and geese can pollute nearby waterways, backyards and athletic fields. Some waterfowl species drop up to a pound of feces every day!

Because you are drawing vermin into the area you moron.

Squirrels eat flower buds, chew on wooden decking, burrow and chew their way into siding, roofing, and air vents.
A large Squirrel population in a suburban area, that has no natural predators, can lead to quite a bit of property damage.
And it's people like you that keep attracting more and more of them, making the situation worse and worse.

But instead of actually thinking things through, you just get mesmerized by a "cute whittle an-i-mal", and feed wildlife which isn't supposed to be fed.
Then you accuse others of hating animals when they call you on your bone headed action.

There was a case a few years ago where a family of squirrels blocked the furnace exhaust and the family inside died from carbon monoxide.

8 year old Julia was scratched by a raccoon and had to undergo rabies shots.
