Many years ago I had gotten letters from Rogers that they had received complaints from movie studios about my downloading activities. Now when I download, I stop seeding as soon as the download completes. I believe (just a guess) that they find you when you're seeding.

As for accessing US content, earlier this year I had signed up with Hotspot Shield, and even though my IP address showed as a US one, I was not able to access a number of US content sites such as the US Netflix, or Pandora. They were still able to detect that I was from Canada.

This is my suspicion also. I have never received any letters but always move the file to a backup hard drive as soon as the transfer is finished. Friends have done the same thing, for much longer, and with much heavier download traffic than I and they have received no threats or warnings.

Thanks for the help BlueLaser:

I think I will probably try a VPN for a year and see how it goes.

A good VPN will definitely keep you anonymous. Rogers won't know even though you still use their network. I can explain it if anyone wants to know how.

I recommend Private Internet Access. $40/year, good software, decent speed and reliability, no logging. The free ones make money somehow. Usually by logging what you do and selling your info. Maybe they sell it anonymously, maybe they don't. I don't risk it.

-to simply watch US Netflix, DNS is also a way too
-I think VPN tends to be a bit slower and that is something to look for when deciding which vpn to use
-there are free ones out there
-There are also ones with free trials

Personally, I do like it and would recommend, but it is not something everyone will feel a need for

Never tried hotspot, but when you connect to the vpn, did you try logging out etc? Usually mine works just by refreshing.

Then there was a problem with your "VPN". Mostly likely you had what's called a "DNS leak". When looking for a DNS provider, you want to find one that specifically offers DNS leak protection.

As for not seeding, you don't understand how BitTorrent works. If you have any part of the download, even if it's just a fragment of a file, you are uploading it. Seeding just means you continue to upload after you've finished downloading.

The way torrent companies track you now, they just start downloading the file as well and track every IP that send them part or downloads part from them. You can too if your torrent software allows you to watch "connections".

Stop downloading from public tracker sites like piratebay and start using private sites. Most private sites are invite only so you may have to get a friend or co-worker to send you an invite. Rodgers will still know you are downloading but the film companies will not.
When torrents are uploaded to public sites companies will download the files themselves and be able to see any IP address sharing that file. They search the various IPs and send out letters.
The lesson here. STOP USING PIRATEBAY!!

Edit to add:
I have been a heavy downloader for years (no VPN or seedbox) and have never been warned of anything. If you are truly worried about the legalities of the content you download get a VPN but if not don't waste your money. Just find a private tracker.
Private trackers are always garbage. I have never seen one worth using and I have been a heavy torrent user (using piratebay) for years before I got a VPN with no letters as well. Besides, all it takes is one person that's downloading from your private tracker to share that file with someone else and you've lost your safety net. And it's not hard to do. Send the hash of the torrent and others can download with no torrent file or tracker information. Most torrents these days are trackerless so a private tracker is an antiquated concept.

Ever since magnet links and DHT came out, downloading from TBP has been no different from using a private tracker. Maybe you haven't been caught yet, but you have no protection against it. Don't be surprised when that changes.
