So today I was sitting on the subway minding my own business and trying to get to work. A girl sat beside me and started a conversation. About 2 minutes in she finally got to her point, she wanted to know if I could give her $7 to help her pay for a prescription (or so she says). I politely say no.

So this is when it gets interesting. She starts asking me about my life and what I do, etc. She asks if I was born here and I tell her, I was born in the USA and my family has been in America for several generations. I came to Canada from Texas years ago. I came here to Canada when I was 2.

The lunatic then asks me if my parents are from China. I tell her no, they are Japanese-but we have been here for a very long time! She then goes on to tell me (in retarded tone) what the word tax means. She says that, "I bet you did not pay for your education, the Canadian government probably did while real Canadians citizens starve". I tell her again, that like her I am a Canadian taxes are around everywhere and that even in Texas people pay tax (because she acted like taxes are something exclusive to Canada). She then begins to tell me how much of a hell it must have been living in China. And she makes it seem like Canadians are being tortured just so chinese can come here for a free ride. She gets so pissed off because I am supposedly, "Chinese trash taking away from Canadians" that i just get up and walk away.

I swear to god this lady must have been smoking some dope. What I have to do with China- I really do not know. Plus I paid my way through university and no one gave me a free ride. And nowadays working, a few hundred of my hard earned dollars goes to taxes every week.

And it brings this to another point- I am completely fed up with people who run their mouth to quickly and jump to conclusions because of how someone looks. To assume that I am not from north america and have no concept of taxes because I am asian just pisses me off.

Now what the TTC needs to do is get these loons off the bus/subway. I own a car, but I rarely use it. Loons like the lady I met today are what make the TTC unappealing to the people who own cars. I prefer public transit to using my car because I find it is a much healthier lifestyle- I walk more and spend less time stressed in traffic messes idling my car.

That is the kind of stuff that is posted every day in the Politics and international affairs forum here. Maybe she is a terbite taking a break from
the internet.

It's been good to know ya
I take the subway only once or twice a year when I see the need to head downtown there for something or other. Other than that I stick to Mississauga and I have always each time getting on the subway seen strange acting people. If not on the way to downtown I will see something strange on the way back. Why does Toronto seem to have more people that talk to themselves than in Mississauga or sit doing strange things with their hands and staring at them or picking their noses or cleaning their ears with their finger nails and then licking their fingers to clean their nails or seem to care less about scratching their butts in public? The list goes on. OH, and forget the subway what about those who piss right on the streets.

It is funny how close Toronto is to here yet the difference in behaviour. If a child throws away a pop can in my neighborhood here an elderly lady will yell at the kid to pick it up and put it in the trash can. Shoot the last storm that hit here I seen a trash can blow away and one of the neighbors that was close by to it went and picked it back up and cleaned it up.

Oh you were only talking about the trash in the subway. Excuse me. :p

Anyways thanks for the title of this thread as a reminder not to hurry back.

Between a rock and a hard place
Asiangurl - TTC lady said you walked away too fast and asked me to explain Canadian taxes to you like this:
Let's say you have sixteen little paper boxes of rice...
Now the government can either take away your chopsticks and give you a spoon subsidy or force you to eat out of ecological bowls made from recycled Mattel toys laced with lead paint.
**** wha passes out drunk ****

Seriously, it could be worse. I have sat next to Zanta no less than 7 times now. Yesyesyes

Jade I am sure there are just as many characters in Mississauga but they just stay home because the Transit system is so crappy.

Ah the TTC getting rave reviews once again, lol, but really I'd rather get stressed out all alone in my car than put up with TTC wackos. Sounds like the beggars have taken up riding.

Wherever I'm At
A little misdirected?

So it's the TTC's fault that they allow the public on a PUBLIC transit system?

It's sad that anyone has to put up with this, and I'm not at all defending inappropriate behaviour, but to blame this on the transit system seems to be deflecting.

Blame it on society and human ignorance, but leave the public setting out of it. If this happened in a diner or hotel lobby with another patron, would the establishment be at fault?

By the way, I'm not a TTC or transit worker.

One reason is that most of the services/programs that the poor, homeless or mentally-ill use are available in Toronto and are centrally located (ie. walk or use the TTC).

Forget the TTC, it's the lunatics behind the wheel where you really have to watch out !

That...

"And it brings this to another point- I am completely fed up with people who run their mouth to quickly and jump to conclusions because of how someone looks."

...would make two of us. Welcome to my world...and I would be very surprised if this is the first time you've run into this.

I personally have only been on public transit a small handful of times since coming to Toronto. I drive...even though I live in the city again, and did before, because I find public transit to be far more of a nuisance than looking for parking or dealing with traffic is. It doesn't go where I want to go, it comes with rules I don't understand (though I am sure I could learn them if i were a regular rider...not saying it is complicated, just admitting that *I* don't understand it), and it ain't cheap. Cheaper than owning a car? Yes...but I am not going to give up the car...and so frankly the $5 to ride the TTC just isn't worth it to me.

Anyway...nice rant...

LOL! Yes, I remember the days taking the Mississauga Transit... buses would be sometimes an hour late just b/c it was too cold (and no snow)... TTC is a great contrast to Miss. Transit!

Hey asiangurl1, great rant!

I was thinking the same thing.

While I feel sorry for the original poster, it's not the TTC's fault. Furthermore, merely speaking to you, even asking for money is not a crime in our society, so there is nothing anyone could do.

At the end of the day, the person in question (the nutty lady) is a bit of a whack job. There are tons of them all over the damn place.

All you can do is get up and move, or ignore her.

well the US has much more of this than toronto...

...in my experience.

No place I have been ANYWHERE has more homeless and mentally challenged people on the streets than Toronto. Every damn corner downtown...and in every neighborhood (and I used to live in Forest Hills..we had a guy there who liked to sleep in the Scotiabank ATM lobby at night and chilllax in front of the Second Cup during the day).

Years ago, I was on a train very late one night and an old wino gets on all liquored up. There were maybe about 10 people in the car - a couple, and few other solos and some yuppie guy with a shirt and tie on beating on a lap top.

The old wino gets on the train, but stands in the door, blocking the door so it wouldn't close.

Three tones, da da da (you know the ones)

but the guy just sort of stands in the door wobbling back and forth and smiling and drinking out of his bottle laughing as if he has some sort of power over everyone to hold us up.

3 more tones, still the guy stands in the door.

Someone yells, "come on buddy, we just want to go home"

3 more tones, he's still in the door.

We're sitting there, train is not moving, no-one is coming.

Anyway, the yuppie gets out of his seat with a scowl on his face and I think, " oh great, here comes Negotiation 101"

Nope, the yuppie walks up to the wino and just hits him square in the chest with all his might causing the wino to fall back on the platform on his ass.

Doors close, train pulls away, yuppie goes back to his seat, veins in his temple throbbing.

Everybody in the train just looks at each other and yuppie never looks up from his screen.

I think LE could issue a ticket to the nutty person for interfering with someone's enjoyment of the TTC and/or arrest the person for mischief and/or criminal harassment. Did the nutty person touch you? If yes, it is assault and/or sexual assault.
