ive been thinking about registering a new site

my friend suggested bluehost.com as one of the best hosting companies out there

she prefers it since i will get the name for free, for life.

problem is they dont host .ca's (im stuck using a .ca it seems)

curious if anyone knows a similarly great deal, that will host .ca's

also, is it true that names are held for three months after they have expired, after when they become available again? i really would prefer a .com, and at some point i was able to read that the name i want expired to its owner in October.

thanks
maya

i dont think fuse offers your domain name for free, for life...thats what makes bluehost special methinks

Domain names are really cheap. Check out the prices on Godaddy--

http://www.godaddy.com/

Their hosting is cheap too if you buy longer term.

But there are some hosting sites that host free in return for a discrete link to a porn site. Such as this site's host:

http://www.andreaoftoronto.com/

You don't have to host and buy the URL from the same company.

You should always buy .com AND .ca and maybe .org

The transfer of names can get tricky. There are people who lay claim on expired names and try to resell them.

An experienced webmaster/mistress can set this up for you. Of course, you might have to pay them.))

Hrmm...there might be a bit of confusion here.

MMB, are you saying that Bluehost does not offer .ca domain registration or that they do not offer .ca hosting?

The reason being that they may not be a .ca domain name registrar but they can easily offer hosting for your .ca domain name.

What I've done is go through www.10dollar.ca, register a .ca domain name...then turn around and sign up with my fav webhosting provider in the US for one of their plans. Get the details on how to point the domain name to the webhost's servers and I'm good to go. :)

Been very happy with HostPapa.ca for hosting - $6 per month with unlimited diskspace and bandwidth - don't know if the unlimited part is really true, never tried to test it.

BTW: missmayablue.com is available for $12,55 per year from GoDaddy. The price goes down if you buy three years I think and it's even less if you buy a hosting package.

Don't pick a hosting company just cause of a $14 free domain name. Actually register your domain name separately. Most web hosting companies give you the free domain name in order to keep you as their client because its a pain in the butt to move it. Also, when they register your domain name, they actually keep legal ownership over it. Most people don't realize that and never ask. Following the registration, you can use any hosting company. GoDaddy is pretty cheap. As for the "guy in the basement" solutions.. beware.. when they lose power, your website shuts down. They aren't setup to be a proper data centre. Okay for the fun little websites, but if you're trying to run a business, the service just isn't there.

I have a non-adult site on GoDaddy and have found them excellent. They are always available by phone if needed.

They also have a service that will snatch the URL you want when it becomes available. There is a "hold" on expired names. Not sure whether it is two months or three. I seem to recall 90 days.

There are people who cruise the expiring sites and snatch them. Then they try to rersell them. Any site that has been up for a while draws traffic and therefroe has some value.

I agree on "guys in the basement." They tend to disappear along with your password info and eventually the site itself.

I've never had a problem with GoDaddy or DotCanada.com. But I do advise you to get your domain name separately and not jump at the FREE domain name ploy.
