Horses first, but I haven't own one since I had to put my baby down a few years ago. Since then I only rode once, it was an extremely painful experience
She broke her two front legs...I couldn't pay for the vet bills and that she may walk again

I prefer cats over dogs. You can leave for two or three days and not overly worried about them.
Ouch!!
When I read this post my heart nearly broke
I've had cats and dogs especially when I had a horse and competing with her eventing. To this day after giving up competing and walking away from "Jess" I have only been riding once on a Cuban beach years later and it hurt like hell. it just was not the same.
Regardless of cats, dogs or horses it's matter of gaining their trust and then you have a friend for life with no complications it's pure simple trust
The hardest thing to do is put them down when the time calls for it

One of these days I may get "back on the horse" but

Everywhere
Most animals, are non violent for the most part, unless their trained by us humans to be so. Yes some of them can be more independent than others
ie cats vs dogs, but never think for one minute, that the cat is less affectionate or loving than a dog, They are doing what they are suppose to do, in their own way.
Which us humans, sometime, have a hard time comprehending with. I mean, we've all heard of dog fights in an arena, I have yet to hear cat fights in that same arena.

I think the most interesting aspect about cats, is that they are not intimidated by humans, where as dogs are. The question is do you want to intimidate your pet or love them.

I think the latter is better. And the cat will respond positively to that action.
