I only buy a small container once or twice a year, so it was likely 2008 when I last found some.

This was not a specialty product, it was always on the shelves since I was a little kid (at least). Now I cannot find it at Loblaws, Metro or Sobeys.:(

I have found buckwheat honey but i buy from the beekeepers who sell their product at the farmer's market. I also find it tastes much better that the honey you get in the stores.

I thought this thread was going to be an affectionate reference to Buckwheat, who's recent claim to fame has been defending unions and needing to borrow money.

This thread is sweeter.

You can get it at St. Lawrence Market (Toronto). A couple of independent honey vendors sell it. I typically go on Saturday morning and so I don't know it they also are there other days.

every "health" or other type name store has buckwheat honey, occasionally produit du Quebec: sarrasin

That manuka, reads like an elixir, tastes like cigarette butts steeped in rancid beer bottles.

Buckwheat honey

or im sure if you went to a well stocked natural/organic type grocer you could find it...
Word.

Even some Chinese/Korean mini supermarkets carry them. A brand I frquently use is called " Northern Hives " , about $7.50 per 1 kg/35 oz jar.

At Ambrosia, the health food chain stores, they have their own brand which goes for about the same price as Northern Hives; same size too.

Thanks for all the info

I will try the markets and speciality stores.

Still curious though- I wonder what happened at the mainstream supermarkets?

st. lawerence would be good, or im sure if you went to a well stocked natural/organic type grocer you could find it... or some new kind of honey you have yet to try to tied you over.

one of my favorites is manuka honey from new zealand.
manuka is another name for tea tree, which is what the bees are harvesting from, resulting in a honey that is really good for you.
What does it taste like?

Too many bears in the aisles.

What does it taste like?
FWIW http://www.newzealandhoneyshop.co.uk/manuka-honey-information.html

We've often struggled to describe the taste of manuka honey, except to say it has quite a strong and distinct flavour that most people like - coming from New Zealand we have just grown up on its taste and consider it normal.

As professional honey tasters are hard to find, we've sought the opinion of a professional chocolate taster instead: (based on the Comvita UMF10+ honey)

Smell - molasses and caramel

Taste - molasses + raisin + dates, plus candied orange peels

Aftertaste - molasses + wood + eucalyptus

Got it!

Lots of buckwheat types at Denningers.

(Though I still wonder why I am paying for a fancy import rather than the long established 'regular' stuff)

I would not be surprised if most of the honey labelled as "buckwheat honey" is not really from buckwheat pollen. And I doubt there is any way of knowing...unless you can find out where it comes from and if that area has a lot of buckwheat.
