Nin jitsu would be my recommendation and if you do it, find greg tremblay. 8 schools from fight with swords to fighting underwater stealth to fighting with cellphones. Greg is located in downtown.

It's not the Martial Art that matters ...it's the Martial Artist.

There's no such thing as the best system. That's like asking "what's the best colour?" A system that works well for some won't work for others. I have a couple black belts and there are a few systems I've tried where I couldn't even become effective at the basics because they were counter-intuitive for me and my body's range of movements didn't suit them.

It's all about how much effort you put in to understanding the art's applications. I've seen black belts who couldn't spar to save their lives, and I've seen yellow belts (beginners) who could kick as fast, and harder than me. Find the style that you personally identify with and train your ass off.

That's the best "system".

Ding ding ding!! We have a winner!!

Many here are focused on the school, yet ignore the individual and that is just as important.

What are your personality traits? You're physical traits/capabilities? What interests you in a certain style.

Using myself as an example...I am a rather passive person, short and rather heavy. As a result, I would find an aggressive form contrary to my personality. And while study and practice would counter some physical deficits, high kicking forms mightn't be the best for me.

Instead, Aikido is much better suited. A defensive form, focusing on throws and take downs rather than blows. A form where your feet seldom leave the floor.

Also ask yourself, "why do I want to learn a martial art?" Physical exercise? Mental discipline? Perfect body & mind? (And by perfect I don't mean ripped and chiseled, more of state) Self defense? Beat up the guy down the street? Shear curiosity?

I started because I was curious, but found I enjoyed the technicality and the combination of mental and physical. I quit due to no school to attend near by, and now have long term (unrelated) injuries to contend with as well.

Though we do have a local Tai Chi school...

Sorry to disagree with you, but have you seen the forest of trophies most TKD schools have in their windows? TKD, for the most part, actually forces you to keep your hands DOWN.

There are martial arts styles that do take into account dirty moves like eye gouging and ear ripping, btw. The styles I mentioned earlier, and are quite effective in the street. James Mitose, the man who opened up Kempo to the world, used to send his students into bars to pick fights with sailors, to ensure his techniques were effective.
ignorance, and nothing but.

Sport TKD 'forces' you to keep your hands down, just like sport Jiu-jitsu 'forces' you to expose your genitals to...

Brazillian Ju-Jitsu
Absolutely

In the UFC it is the ground fighters who win and ju jitsu is about grappling techniques

If all you know is boxing if a grab you you will no longer know what to do

The problem with the UFC is there are rules but no rules in a street fight but brazilian or Gracie ju jitsu is geared for a street fight

Muay Thai kickboxing for personal training

Advance Krav Maga for hands on streetfighting, like you were on patrol in Hebron City or Jenin....with heavy weaponary.

Speaking of heavy weapons, that will be H&K MK 23 handgun, mixed with H&K MP7A1 for CQB or H&K G36KV for Carbine.

Or have mini Uzi for CQB, IMI Tavor for Carbine as backup

That's before you get to know intimately how to disassemble, assemble and fire accurately for the Автомат Калашникова 47, aka AK47, with Vodka as extra

Couldn't agree more...spent almost 18 years in the military as part of some heavily tuned specialized units, and was posted to active duty in Iraq and Somalia in the early 90's...while we were there, some of the Israeli Mossad tactical badasses on loan to the advanced US forces gave us a very intense 6 week training in defense techniques of Krav Maga...very practical/pragmatic approach to quickly disarming and disabling and adversary in close quarters direct combat.

gotta mention that some of these instructors were very scary fuckers you definitely don't want to make the wrong eye contact with at a security checkpoint in the badlands...

No doubt about it, their combat experiences really make "excellent" players of "Modern Warfare 2", "Rainbow Six" franchise and "Wolfenstein" bunch of wuss

BTW, there're rumours that the same tactical bad asses on loan, with Xe as cover to train the Iraqi Kurds security forces in Northern Iraq to counter Shia in the South and Sunni militants in central Iraq, in addition to very close ties between powerful, secular Turkish military and IDF.

Things would be very interesting and disturbing when the Iranians are dragged into this mess.

Jeet Kun Do's a philosophy, not a style.

BJJ does NOT defeat all challengers - the idea that any style would is plain dumb.

You can be trained in all the Maga you want, but if you suck or have no natural intuition for it, it won't work for you.

Basically, to answer the Bruce Lee question ...if Bruce Lee knew Judo, he'd kill you with Judo. If he knew Tai Chi, he'd kill you with Tai Chi. If he knew how to knit, he'd kill you with knitting. He's proof of the rule, it's not the style but the practitioner's commitment to what he's training.

Thanks very much Ultra Man for the clarification but wasn't Bruce Lee's technique a variant of standard Kung Fu if I can use that expression?

You are so right about the commitment and discipline of the martial artist.

In fact, the guy who I knew who headed Energy Lake Kung Fu studios said that the legendary Bruce Lee was perhaps, the most technical of all martial artist he's ever seen.

p.s. What's BJJ?
Bruce Lee was schooled by Judo Gene LaBell on a movie set. Many people seen it.

BJJ = Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Bruce Lee was trained in Wing Chun, traditional Kung Fu.
