A lot of wonderful inventions come to mind but I think that the telephone is the greatest one. How about you?

the greatest invention is the wheel. Without it, there would not be any electicity, internet, beer, etc. ad infinitum.
the second greatest invention is the thermos. It keeps cold things cold and warm things warm. How does it know that what's inside should be kept cold and not warm, or warm and not cold?

Bingo.We'd be possibly hundreds of years behind where we are now in pretty much every aspect of life if the printing press was never invented.Print inspires....
There are so many important inventions it's hard to say what is the greatest. I do know the internet has probably had the greatest influence on society both positive and negative. However if you put a gun to my head and made me pick one that is most important for the progression of society I would say fire. It's also the oldest invention known to man. Fire enabled us to keep warm and cook meat and is the basis for energy which is essential for survival.
A useless invention, because no one knew how to go up or down, left or wright!
winkIt wasn't until that guy that invented the telephone came along and figured out ways to actually NAVIGATE the aircraft did it become relevant.

Same can be said about the wheel IMHO.
I like the printing press but then you don't get the printing press without the wheel.
