I may try starting a travel type website with lots of pics so I want them to be of a good quality. I am leaning towards a phone as I can use it for many uses.
With the smart phone you should be able to take the picture, do some basic editing and upload the picture to a website while on the move. There would be some learning curve if you are not into tech. Smart phone might be able to read the SD card from a camera also, so could use the phone to select the pictures and do the website work. For someone on the move, this combination would make sense, if it works without too many problems, I have never done it.

The editing feature on the Samsung Galaxy 5 is cool (not sure if better than say MS Office desktop photo editor). It automatically keeps the original intact and saves any edited versions under a different file name.

I want to be able to carry it easily in a pocket, I usually wear shorts with fairly roomy side thigh pockets. If I get drunk it's not hanging around my neck but tucked in my pocket.
A couple friends have the new iPhone 6 and they take excellent pictures. Might be the best bet for you. Not sure about low light but the autofocus works really well. It also takes 1080p video, 240fps slow motion and time lapse. Just make sure you get enough memory.
I have a Canon Power shot SX510 HS and for someone who isn't technical this is as good as it gets. It is easy to use, takes videos and costs around 270 at Costco.
What's a good camera?
I'll say it's one that takes pictures, but what do I know.
For this kind of stuff I always consult Consumer Reports.
Now you can access the online version from home by going through the Toronto Library website. And the price is right- nada.

Agreed, but it doesn't have a view finder,...which makes it difficult to make smooth movies,...which it is capable of.
Although ones with an optical view finder are a little bigger,...I would still recommend one, much better for composing, and smoothness.
How do you get billed? Will it work on a newer phones (standard SIM card)? The only reason I'd get one is to stay in touch with the local novia at a rate that's cheaper than what my Cdn provider will charge.
You pay up front at the office, minimum 10CUC. You can buy top up cards throughout the city if you need more. I get the phone for the same reason as you describe, couldn't imagine not having it now.

I really have to look into this. It's good for calling cabs, restaurants and my chicas without paying Bell for their crazy charges. How much time do you get for 10 CUC?

There was a Fujitsu DSLR on sale at a Shoppers for $150) down from $197 the other day. I liked the way it is easy to hold. My Sony DSLR (capable of inter-changing real lenses) has a small body, but the lens is big, making it a bit awkward, yet it's a fine camera and below $500 (I think I got it for between $350 and $425 on sale).
You would be amazed how many folks still buy high end photo equipment. I just bought a $1,100.00 combination portrait/ micro lens for my Nikon dslr. Also just bought the Sony rx100 mk3 from Aden Camera. It's still a huge hobby , even more so now than in the past with all of the online photo forums, sites which store pics, pic sharing sites. I doubt real cameras will ever be out of vogue
They still suck in low light and when you need to zoom...like if you were to record your kids music concert or play and can't get a close up and your scene is grainy like porridge...yup there is still a need!
Personally, I would not buy a camera under $500. I would instead keep using my iPhone for random day to day pics, pics of items to sell on craigslist or quick on the spot pics of people throughout the day. I use mine allot whenever I furniture shopping and I want get a quick shot of the piece.
I would however buy a very, very good PnS or mirrorless camera for those times when I want a much better shot with more manual control like traveling, b-day parties, concerts or night time shots.
I would gladly shell out $500+ on cameras like the Sony RX100, M2, M3, Sony a5100/a6000, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX100, Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 or one of my favorite sleeper camera/camcorder the Sony RX10.
I think the quality of these cell phone camera are great and it is nice to have on me for the quick random shot but I would never give up my higher end PnS, Mirrorless or Nikon D7100 for them.
I believe using a cell phone camera in conjunction with say a Sony RX100 is a great paring for most situations even on vacation.

So I just sold my 4 year old Canon t3i DSLR because I was not happy with the low light and video quality, always a bit soft. Although I did like the colors and the cinematic feel of it.
I picked up the Panasonic LX100 point and shoot 24-70 f1.7 4/3" sensor and my mind is fucking blown. I have never seen better quality 4k video quality. Although I am viewing it on a 2.5k display, I can't believe what I am seeing. The video looks better on the monitor then in real life and the low light blows my mind compared to canons t3i 1080p no scaling or anything else I shot for video. It's like watching moving photos. Canon always seemed a bit soft.
I originally really wanted the RX100mkiii based on all the recs but this thing blows my mind. The images are nice too, a bit distorted wide open, not as good as t3i in good light for photos, but in low light kiiiiiils it dead.
Wow, I can't believe such IQ and dynamic range from a fing point and shoot. Can't believe I waited this long to get it.
Some cameras are really good at certain things while some just blow up the competition and set themselves apart.
Perfect example is the Canon HF100 which was an amazing 1080p camera.
Then came the Canon 5Dmarkii that revolutionized the industry for amateur video.
After the came the GH4.
Now in my opinion Panasonic LX 100 released in late 2014 blows away the P&S competition given amazing low light and dynamic range and is a good all arounder.
