Bobby Orr had not yet been born.

Colour news reels were a new and exciting

NATO did not exist, nor did the People's Republic of China.

Neither Alcoholics Anonymous nor the Hell's Angels had yet been founded.

Italy had never in its history held a democratic General Election.

The Volkswagen Beetle was not yet for sale in the USA.

Clothes were still being rationed in Britain.

Newfoundland was an independent nation and Ireland was still part of the British Commonwealth.

The first computer with memory had not yet been created.

South Africa had not yet set up Apartheid.

There were no commercial jet planes.

"Don Quixote" had never been translted into English.

Shriley Temple was a popular child star and no-one had ever heard of "I Love Lucy"

....

In short, it was a long fucking time ago. Move on.

Absolutely, move on. It seems most of the world's problems are because we can't let go.

Fine ...

extinguish any land claims that predate your thirtysomething living memory. Good way to shut up those pesky Native American/First Nation agitators as well! Where does that put Israel, though - wanting unassailable rights to lands the Romans kicked them out of in the 1st century AD? Get a grip, you morons!

When was Newfoundland an independent country, by the way? How did that happen?

The kicking-off-land went both ways. Jews were kicked off land in areas that became Arab countries. Arabs were kicked off land in areas that became Israel. It was nasty, and it was vicious, and people on both sides suffered and perpetrated horrible atrocities, and it was a long time ago.

If you want to do the math more Jews were kicked off more land than Arabs were. Arab countries carried out a systematic ethnic cleansing that robbed 800,000 Jews of their property and land.

The same thing happened in Israel although on a lesser scale--while Arab countries for the most part eliminated ALL of their Jews, Israel continues to have a sizeable Arab population.

Unless you are referring to Ulster, the Republic of Ireland came into being in 1922, a full 25 years before the Jews won the war of independence.

Ireland became a republic and left the commonwealth on April 18th, 1949. You're right though independence came earlier so that one probably isn't as interesting. If you'd like I can make up for it by adding to the list more things that happened a long fucking time ago.

Refugees...but a lot of them live on basically the same land they had before. It isnt' like they were transported far. It would be like me moving from Bowmanville to Oshawa because I lost my house because I couldn't pay the mortgage.....ok maybe Not THAT simple.

The point is, West Bank and Gaza are pretty much the same kind of land and same everything as what was over the border. Jew's were kicked out of every Islamic nation in the late 40's and they were all over the place. They just picked up...and started over. Bout time the Palestinians took a good hard look at what they are doing to make their lives better rather than just lobbing rockets and complaining...

you are talking about cause and effect, the Jews thrown out of Iraq, Yemen, Egypt and so on were a cause of the troubles that begun in 1948 brought in by the racist followers of Theodore Herzel, armed with a fascist European style ideology and with world guilt as to what had just happened in Auschwitz and Treblinka they carried out their ethnic cleansing first.

The Sephardic Jews that had been in those Arab countries had been living there for centuries in relative peace, and yes are the brethren of the Arabs unlike the Azhekanazi who were descendants of converts, to Judaism yes there was discrimination but any Jew in their right mind would have preferred Arab or Turkish rule over the Russian czars or Spanish kings.

Well at least now you're acknowledging that they are indigenous people to the area. However you've got yor timing wrong.

Jews were purged from Arab areas before 1948, during 1948, and after 1948. It got WORSE afte 1948 but it had been going on a long time.

There were 800,000 Jews living in Arab lands in 1948 but by 1991 there were only around 16,000 left. The amount of real estate stolen from Jews in Arab countries is estimated to be larger in square km's than the state of Israel.

Other than that they are now self governing and have an army to defend themselves from persecution they did not gain land, although they were relocated.

Right up until the people of Newfoundland voted in a referendum to become part of Canada.

1948 was a long fucking time ago.

How old are you, fuji? I was born in 1947. Somehow, 1948 doesn't seem such "a long fucking time ago".

UNRWA is the _only_ agency in the world that considers the decendents of refugees to be refugees, rather than natural born citizens of the country they were born in.

The only reason why there are still Palestinian "refugees" is because their host nations failed to integrate them, as Canada integrates refugees into mainstream society, and as Israel integrated the Jewish refugees who fled in the other direction.

UNRWA exists and these people are called "refugees" to this day for one single purpose: The destruction of Israel.

1948 was a long fucking time ago.

Islamic apologists always conveniently forget about all the Jews that got kicked off their land throughout the Islamic world.

If find it very telling how Israel took these Jewish refugees in but the Muslim world refuses to take any of these Palestinian refugees.

You are in fact missing one of the larger reasons that *UNRWA* regards children of refugees refugees, it means that they can continue to justify their own existance. It is one of the iron laws of beuracracy, they tend to be self fulfilling and continually growing.
