Looking back at its history, which country would you be proud to be a citizen of? We all know certain countries (cough cough Germany) have done terrible things, even though they accomplished a lot. The US has accomplished lots but can one be proud of its history when it reached its greatness through genocide and slavery? Most great countries have a black mark somewhere in their past...

Interestingly of these Canada is the State with the shortest independent existance. So to get a full flavour one would have to include actions of both France and Great Britain.

The British Emprire was the greatest empire the world has ever seen. It doesn't take a genius to look down at the list of the countries that they founded and come to that conclusion.

Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, right on down the list. The institutions that they put in place - the type of government, the legal systems remain to this very day.

Clearly Britain is the greatest nation ever.

But I voted for Canada because I'm Canadian and Canada is the best country in the world today in which to live. People will often say that "we are lucky to live in Canada" and I will correct them to say that Luck has nothing to do with it, but yes, we as individuals are fortunate to live in the greatest place on earth (other than the winter weather which does suck I admit.)

If country is synonymous with people I would nominate the native Indian.
Their survival of almost complete eradication by the Europeans is
nearly miraculous.

The second people I admire most is the American blacks for their
resilience against slavery's oppressiveness. A lesser people would have
been completely destroyed.

The third people in the lie up is none other than the Jewish people. Just to name
a few prominent German Jews off my head I can think of Albert Einstein,
Sigmund Freud, Felix Mendelssohn and Wolfgang Mozart. Notwithstanding
such colossal Jew-haters as Martin Luther, Richard Wagner and Adolf
Hitler it is the brilliant minds of the Jew that help make Germany one
of the world's preeminent civilization. Humanity should forever owe to the Jews
the lesson to history on what kind of evil even an eminent civilization could
degenerate into. But to me what makes them a truly remarkable
people is that they have their staunchest supporters in the Christian
world although no one knows better than them about the falsehood of
Christianity.

Canada is not a bad place to live if you are a woman
and it's not a good place to live if you are a man who likes women

Oh dear, miss the good old days when the British ruled the wave.

BTW, it should be Great Britain.

your forget that the british empire ran an opressive colonial regime of slavery, subjugation, opression etc? aks the irish and the former colonies
Dyslexia, eh?

Again depends on who you ask. Maybe so the darker skin, less so for the lighter skin. No?

BTW, the Brits were not even close to the Catholics colonists, say the French, Portuguese, Spaniards and the Belgians when it came to those crimes.

Any advice on how to ask them? Not that many could speak Gaelic and the local languages.

BTW, is Jamaican derived from English? It sounds like English.

My Great Grand Parents , on my mothers side, left Ireland around 1900 because he was arrested for fishing in Brits only lake.

How does that work as a start for ya?

Which Irish? Remembering your recent thread on the British Legacy in Africa, we know the quality of your thinking process. I suspect you've not spent much time in Northern Ireland or the Republic and i don't mean transplants, just as I suspect you didn't spend much of any time in north Africa, working and talking to these people. What you'll find is that many countries that get their independence find out they can't run anything because they never had to, therefore ask their 'repressive' masters back to show them how to run things. In time, they can manage and ask them to leave, but don't be in too big hurry.

My family was kicked off the land and replaced by cattle and sheep, but I don't hate all Sassanachs. 300 years old grudges are for airheads.

Sorry to hear that but again I am not Irish.

That being said, how come a big chunk of the Republic of Ireland economy owe tonnes of money to the British banks? Don't the Irish want nothing to do with anything related to Britain, including the language??

Try to tell the same thing to the Mandarin speaking Chinese. They still could not let go.

That being said, it's an irony when they want to be priggish in front of the camera, but then many of them would spend a fortune to send their kids to study in Britain and launder their money in London High Street luxury stores/real estates.
