I think it should be the blind skier (name escapes me). Hasn't the flag-bearer always been someone we've never heard of??

I'd like to see them pass it around to as many athletes as they can manage. The less it looks like a military marchpast and the more it resembles a school picnic the bettter.

Jerome Iginla ??? I would put Steve Nash ... He represents the province and Canada everytime he speaks ...

Not sure but i think you actually have to be a member of the team in order to be the flag bearer.

How about any "Joe Tax Payer" who is funding the shame called Olympics

This makes me want to puke

"Canadian athletes will be awarded $20,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze - a practice the COC started for the 2008 Beijing Games and extended to Vancouver.

Only three of the 23 players on the roster of the Canadian men's hockey team currently earn an annual salary of less than US$3.5 million. The combined income of Team Canada will be more than $120 million this season."

While this isn't the purpose of the thread I'm actually 75% in favour of the Olympics. Joe Public has an opportunity to really get his money's worth on this in terms of promoting the country worldwide and leaving various facilities. As far as paying for performance I think that it moves the Olympics quite a ways away from the amatuer event that it was 50 years ago but most other countries also do this. As far as the hockey player are concerned if you are making $125,000 per week getting $10,000 a week and only if you win is a substantial cut. Factor in the risk of injury and I don't think this is unreasonable.

As far as flag bearer my choice is Clara Hughes but I like oldjones' idea of having it a shared honour (although I don't think it looks military at all).

On a related question, there is a debate about who should be the last carrier of the torch. I would vote for Wayne Gretzky or the controversial Steve Fonyo (completed Terry Fox's cross Canada run).

I want Patrice Cormier to light the torch.

Let one of the gay figure skaters carry the flag.
Isn't it just easier to just say you don't give a shit :D Besides the figure skaters ( I assume you are talking about the males) look like they weigh about 90 lbs and could get blown away carrying a flag in any kind of a wind.

I would vote for Rick Hansen... he's even from BC.
Yes, Rick "Man in Motion" Hanson would also be an excellent choice. Somebody on TV mentioned Betty Fox (Terry's mother). I am also thinking of one of our brave soldiers who served in Afghanistan.

Clara Hughes is a very good choice! Multiple medal winner in both Summer & Winter Olympic games.

Johnny sombrero, maximum leader of the black diamond riders m/c, toronto, would be a fine flag bearer. He is a 73- year - old veteran biker, leader of a clean motorcycle club that has not been involved in drugs orprostitution, and he is a loyal, devoted and valiant canadian citizen. I have a lot of respect for the man.

Have always wondered why Figure Skating and for that matter Ballet has always attracted a strong male gay element.

Just heard on TV that Justin Morneau will be the last torch carrier. Bit surprised they would pick a Summer sports guy and one who plays for an America team.

A native Indian would have been a good choice, just an average person who used to live on the land they are playing on now.

Well, it was Clara Hughes and just from listening to her she was the right choice. What a great lady.

1) She is one of only 4 people ever to medal in both the summer and winter games, winning two bronze medals in cycling and a Gold in Turin at 5,000 metre speed skating;
2) She is heavily involved in children's charity, principally Right To Play and works and donates money to them;
3) She is at the end of her career and at age 38 isn't expected to be in medal contention, so the curse of the flag bearer probably doesn't apply.

She has frequently stated that watching Boucher skate in the Calagary Olympics is what inspired her to trans form herself from a pot smoking delinquent teenager to a world class athelete.

As a foot note put me down as someone who is getting a little tired of those with no real opinion of sunbstance feeling that they have to comment by throwing in a political angle. If you want to make the Olympics about the native people's land rights go right ahead. But please do it in a seperate thread that we can ignore if we choose to.
