Because they value school and encourage their children to put hard work into study. Simple as that.

You can BS your way through a history exam after sitting in class and paying half attention, while being too lazy to do any homework. I know, I did that too. I got good marks for very little work.

You cannot BS your way through calculus. You have to sit down and sweat blood over the book to become really good at that. Except for a few evil geniuses out there, everybody else has to study hard to do well at maths. Asians study longer and harder than others.

David Suzuki had a hypothesis on that, I believe it went like this: When you look at Japanese or Chinese characters in order to read, your brain needs to assemble and decipher a lot of critical information from what appears to be a jumbled mess. He had the idea that this may have trained the brain to look for patterns in an equation and find them more easily.
i always thought this was the main factor.. I mean the english alphabet is only 24 characters, compared to the literally thousands unique/abstract chinese characters. When you train your brain to remember and recall these at a young age, math (which is difficult and abstract for many people) becomes very easy.

I've had so many classmates during highschool and uni, who sucked when it came to other subjects but excelled in math. There was this girl especially who had just moved here from China... could barely speak english for classes but when it came to math exams/test, she'd be done in 30 mins and checked her answers twice while the whole class took about 1 and a half hour to complete the exam ><

lets not forget the hardwork they put in also... One can't excel in math just because they're asian and without studying it. And they do eat a lot of fish which is good for brain development :)

1. they work hard.
2. They study more because they are in a foreign county getting a better educaton than they would back home.
3. Alpabetical order in chinese script ( where every symbol is a unique pictogram) is organized in numerical order of strokes in the symbol. fewest strokes at the front of the book( a, b...), most number of strokes at the back of the line (... x, y, z)

50% of them work hard
30% of them were born that way
the other 60% are just lucky

Asian schools are competitive with ours if not better when head to head in competitions. there's a standardized tests that countries compete in some Asian countries often do well.

the hobby needs more capitalism
So, are you guys saying if I download some papers on quantum mechanics and study hard, I'll be the next Stephen Hawkins or Einstein?

Outstanding scientists are not necessarily the product of the toughest
education system. Just because pre-university education in North
America is accessible and less than rigorous doesn't mean
it is going to miss out on the future Einstein and Hawking. As a matter of
fact a lot of very brilliant scientists have been brought up academically here.
I do think we have more to worry about our ability of our schools to produce
a sufficiently literate workforce in general to compete with the third world
in the near future.

I believe its the education system they have back home. I still remember we were pushed to learn multiplications by heart form 1 t0 24. something like 12x5=60, 24x12=288 and such since we were in grade 4. Most of the Asians have some small family business and they are so used to handling money everyday while helping run the family business which is like a practise in math. I was amazed at an American sales lady in New Jersey last yr that she needed a calculator to give me back change for a $12.50 item I bought when i gave her a 20 dollar bill at a clothing store. Most of the kids here are so used to the calculators and such they never use their brain any more. Its all about hands on practise and studying hard.
This.

One should be able to do multiplications without using a calculator for at least numbers from 1 - 20.

My theory is that their brains are wired to concentrate on one thing at a time to the exclusion of other things. This would make them good at math but not so good at driving.

We are good at driving, too, but we just choose to drive like assholes, so we can blend in. You know, when in Rome...
