if it just saves one life its worth it! isnt that the bullshit line we're fed every time to justify stupid rules?
That is stupid logic, but if it saves one life, costs about $0, has no negative impact, then its worth it.

Is there really any reason to go more then 10-15 kph in reverse? Surely there could be an override?
A phone-jammer that operated whenever the car was in Drive/in gear would save more lives.

there is no proof of that, show me some accident stats of cell phone related accidents. Also, you don't think passangers in cabs or people in buses would want to use their phones? Probably as many injuries are cause by walking with cell phone as driving.

His is also from a gun control perspective (eg. not worth to ban high capacity magazine clips if it only saves one life cuz you never know when the enemy will invade continental USA?).

However, there's going to be a budget debate at City Hall about implementing signs and other warnings to lower the speed limit on a particular street to 30 KM when the staff experts say it might not reduce accidents (and especially since a recent accident had nothing to do with speed). A cycling advocate used the "if it saves one life, isn't it worth it" cliche argument. Ironically, I've seen cyclists race down my mother's street at what looked like in excess of the speed limit.

If a cyclist told me that I would say, lets ban cycling then, because that would definitely save more then one life. For the love of god, can someone please tell me HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO GO MORE THEN 15KPH in REVERSE?

So my wife and kids can't use their phones in the car while I'm driving? Don't think you're thought this one through.
