I suspect they should be here pretty soon. Too big of a market for a big name to not try to plunder.
Pizza chain stores do not do well in Montreal because the pizza in the small shops are so good. There were a few restaurant chains that went to Montreal with their conveyor belt ovens, they did not last long.

When I lived in Montreal, my Jewish (and non-Jewish) friends went to Wollensky's, Dunn's and Moise's. Montreal has the best smoke meat in the world.

If you eat Montreal smoked meat, always ask that your bread be toasted. It makes it twice as good.

The food in Quebec in general just blows Ontario out of the water.
As someone who has worked all over hell's half acre in Quebec - from Montreal, to the Eastern townships, to Lac St Jean to Sherbrooke, to Quebec City to the Charlevoix, and Trois Riviere, Grande Mere, to Rimouski, Mont Joli, on out to Perce and Gaspe.....

Yes and no to your statement.

In general, Toronto defeats Montreal and Quebec City - hands down.

In general, small town Quebec defeats small town Ontario.

BUT, when in Quebec

Never order Italian food east of Montreal. I mean NEVER. It's fucking cooked to death, slathered with melted cheese about a half inch thick and they even cut it up into little shards for you when it comes to your table.

And NEVER, EVER order sushi outside of Montreal. It's fucking TERRIBLE. There isn't an Asian outside of Montreal anywhere in Quebec.

Oh, and NEVE EVER try anything ethnic outside of Montreal. It may be a Chinese Restaurant, but it's staffed by Quebecers and they have no fucking clue how to cook.

When in Quebec, stick to the local specialty. For example, in Sainte Flavie in the Gaspe, there is a place called "Capitaine Homard" that has THEE best lobster you will EVER have in your life. Nowhere in Toronto compares. You are taking your life in your hands in the Gaspe ordering Italian (it will be slathered in this tasteless cream sauce), but you can't beat the seafood. I've had seafood in Italy at restaurants that the tour guide books rave about, right on the sea, and it doesn't compare to what you can find in the Gaspe.

How dare you! Your post has so many one-dimensional ethnic stereotypes that I don't even know where to begin! Why... why... why, it seems to fit my own experiences with eating in la belle provence down to the tiniest detail :D .

The GTA may be the business capital of Canada now, after Rene Levesque sent all the head offices packing down the 401. There are many things that Montreal has that other big city would like to have. The population will not put up with bad food or high prices in restaurant. There are no drive by shootings in Montreal. You will not find junkies dead from OD laying in an alley with a needle in their arm. ( like you would on Vancouver ) Traffic is less severe, and the SP/massage/ SC prices are much lower. ( $10 a lap dance ).

It is true that it is hard to find a good Italian restaurant outside Montreal, generally you will get Georgio type franchises that will serve re-heated factory prepared food like you would find at Red Lobster. Even though Celine Dion snapped up Schwartz's - Hebrew Delicatessen you can still get the same product you got years ago.

What I liked about St Hubert's is that you had free coleslaw refill with every meal.

Forget St.Huberts and Swiss Chalet...I wouldn't even feed that chicken to my dogs. The BEST and I mean the absolute best chicken was from Kenny Rogers Roasters.
Years ago there used to be a Kenny Rogers at the South-West corner of Don Mills & York Mills .... tasty

I used to go there quite a bit and really enjoyed it. The chicken was never dry, and they had a great selection of sides.

There's a Papa John's in Barrie and plenty of SC/Harvey's combo restos but mostly in the GTA and beyond from my experience.

Harvey's / Swiss Chalet combos are still around, as are Harvey's in Home Depots. Morningside / 401 for both.
I have never had a bad Harvey's burger, I mean it is a Harvey's burger so you get what you pay for. Also I always see them tossed on the grill after I order from fridge.
As for Swiss Chalet I like it. I never got cold chicken and for taste I like it. Sauce is good.
I did try St.Hubert and thought it was similer. I did not like it as much as SC.
