Long time director, William Friedkin, has passed at 87. His two most famous films are The French Connection and The Exorcist. His only Oscar win was for the former.

He also directed Sorcerer and To Live and Die in LA. Sorcerer is an English version to a French film from the 50's called The Wages of Fear. I haven't seen the original, Sorcerer was awe inspiring, it was his next film after The Exorcist.
