The store guy said just bring in my P.C. and I'll walk out with Windows 7 installed for the all in price of $40.It is a fairly simple process, but $40 is fair. I am assuming you are providing the OS license, or they are using a non legitimate license..
I suspect that the license will not be legitimate, which could cause you issues with updates, and use of MS tools. Even OEM, Windows 7 license costs more than $40, closer to $70, and that does not factor in labour. The store guy said just bring in my P.C. and I'll walk out with Windows 7 installed for the all in price of $40.
BTW: What happens if I buy a new P.C.? Does it come with Windows 7 already installed or do I have to pay $40 again?
Pretty much all new PCs come with W7 installed.BTW: What happens if I buy a new P.C.? Does it come with Windows 7 already installed or do I have to pay $40 again?
I'm not fussed about updates as Windows 7 will probably be superseded by Windows 8 in a few more months anyway.which could cause you issues with updates,
Windows 7 is here for another 18-24 months at least. The updates are important as they plug potential security leaks that windows is known for.I'm not fussed about updates as Windows 7 will probably be superseded by Windows 8 in a few more months anyway.
My P.C. is an old Compaq. Probably at least 10 years old. I have no idea what are the specs.if your running something that old...i doubt you'd be able to run win 7 on it and if you could it would be really slow.
Forget abot Windows 7 your sytem won't run it. I doubt that your computer can handle it Xp required 128 MB Ram, Vista required 256MB Ram and Windows 7 requires ...... well here's a link that explains it all.My P.C. is an old Compaq. Probably at least 10 years old. I have no idea what are the specs.
not necessarily. I've spoken to guys that got their copy of windows 7 from torrents and they were fully updatable.$40 for win7 probably means they are being installed with keys from MSDN licenses. They will stop working in a few weeks. A legitimate copy is not that expensive. Home premium is $100 and Pro is $140 and Ultimate is $199.

Some folks are still running Win98!My P.C. is an old Compaq. Probably at least 10 years old. I have no idea what are the specs.
Thanks. Will try to find my computer specs as per your advice. I'm not a power P.C. user so I don't need a lot of firepower but I occasionally get a message from some websites that say my browser (Internet Explorer 6 or 7) is outdated and I could download Explorer 8 for free but whenever I try nothing happens. Some folks are still running Win98!
If your PC store says they can put W7 on your old PC they may be putting that basic starter version of W7 that goes on some netbooks because it is not as demanding as the full version of W7.
To find your basic PC specs:
Right click on My Computer icon and your specs will show on the General Tab.
Or click on: Start > Control Panel > System and the General Tab will shows your specs.
If your PC is a Pentium 4 with 1 Gig of Ram W7 will run on it.
W7 is not a big resource hog like Vista which required 2-3 Gigs of Ram to run well.
That said Linux WILL run great on your 10 yr old PC....better than Windows.
