Wireless Problems?

When I initially set up my wireless router I had no problems. Now I do. My DSL connection works fine when connected to my PC. But when the DSL is plugged into the router, I can't get a connection to the internet.

I'm using Vista and it's diagnosed the problem and just says the computer is sending a ping but isn't getting a response. I've done the repair option it gives me but that doesn't fix the problem.

Again, when I plug directly into the PC it works fine so something with the router is fucked up (though I got it to work the first time).

Reboots and resetting the modem and router didn't solve the problem.

Any ideas?

Can you connect to your router via the IP like 192.168.1.1 or whatever address your router connect to. If so what status comes up?

Are you getting a link light on router?

If you connect to the router via a cable between the PC and router can you connect to the internet.

Did you implement security on the router and not set it up on the PC?

Try reading the router manual for trouble shooting.

You could start all over again by resetting the router. There is a little pin hole one the back/side of it hold for x amount of seconds depends on manufact. And restart the router. From there reenter the info or create a new account. Do you know how to access your router's homepage?

hope that helps and good luck

Was going to suggest the same.
Awhile back my router acted buggy and I ended up setting it all up again from scratch and all has been fine since.

I am assuming your router is wireless?
Does it turn on?
Does it have the option to hardwire connect to it to set it up?
I seem to recall you had a pc and a laptop (hence why you went wireless) can either connect to it?
Have you tried connecting to it while right beside it?
Does vista acknowledge that it knows there is a wireless router there? (in other words does it connect to the router but not the modem)

Check the router manufacturer's site for firmware updates. Most router issues can be fixed with that if powercycling doesn't work.

Also update your NIC card drivers.

The link light comes up on the router (when the internet cable is connected to it; it's not right now because as soon as I connect to the router, I can no longer access the internet on my PC)

Security was set up on both PC and network. I had the wireless working fine when I originally set up so I don't think that's the problem.

I reset the router. Didn't help.

My setup is DSL line > modem > router > PC.

The purpose of the wireless is for a laptop.

Yes.

It has worked before so something has stopped working.
Ok, sometimes the simplest solution is often overlooked.

You know, the wireless router could just have blown something.

Did you change anything in vista? Anything at all?

Just thinking: how does the signal leave the laptop? Do you have one of those little external cards with the antenna on it? Usb? internal?

Oh, you said the connected light goes out on your modem as soon as you plug in the router.....This may seem like a bother, but as a last resort you could go buy another router, and then return the one that isn't working. Either that or just return it period and try another.

Oh, one other thing: is there anyway you can connect directly to the router with a Cat 5 cable to check the settings?

YOu might also want to try turning off the password protection.

OH SHIT, you know, I had all kinds of trouble with a router and the cause was I had norton windows firewall and windows defender. Each of them stopped access. I had to turn on file and net sharing in each (eventually just deleted norton lol).
