I guess you could pull one off in a way that made fun of yourself for using one.
Otherwise, I would think making something up relevant to the actual situation would be much better.

Spot on. If you say something over the top hokey in a way she knows you're being ironic often can start with a bit of a laugh (e.g., fire off a "hi -come here often? What's your sign?" Then start sniggering sorry snickering for you north americans). It also works as a screening mechanism. Ladies who are sharp enough to pick up on irony are worth chatting to. If they don't get the irony you likely saved yourself some time.

I found some really bad lines

I was in Old Quebec City getting a coffee and said 'bonjour' with a bad pronounciation and remarked about all the tourists. She decided to engage in a quick convo and smiled. Sometimes they will sometimes they will not. Just be casual. Turns out she lives there so I offered to buy her a ' cap - u - sino' if she sat with me. We talked about what it was like to live there. I never got signals she was interested in anything else, that was it

They will signal you but it is usually your job to start the convo. If they know they are hot they can be bolder because, well, they are hot and less likely to get rejection but they could easily be hot and shy or awkward

Just be casual with no expectations then sometimes it happens

Bottom line is do not expect everyone to be receptive because they will not be.
If you have low expectations then you avoid feeling rejected
so just be friendly and casual so you do not put your ego on the line.
