The coyowolf hybrid has adapted well to being able to thrive in the GTA as they are opportunistic predators that eat just about anything .Some animals now have increasingly wolf like appearances, statures, mandibles and bite strengths approaching those of grey wolves. So far they are not forming hunting packs like wolves and are usually solitary but do sometimes hunt in pairs.
Maybe the solitary true coyote behaviour is best suited for urban life.
There are people that are leaving food out for the coyowolves in the GTA which emboldens them to confront humans increasingly.
Coyowolves that venture into wolf territory are often killed and eaten by the wolves because they are competition predators.
Homeless encampments with their food and litter including human waste attract rodents and raccoons which in turn attract coyowolves .
The human waste from the homeless encampments and the run off in often high in opioid, particularly fentanyl and it is speculated that the strange behaviour of the coyowolves in Vancouver’s Stanley Park maybe from opioids exposure.
There was a case in Scarborough last year where coyowolves were attempting to eat the fresh corpse of a homeless woman in a tent in one of the parks when they were scared off by the arriving paramedics and firefighters.
Times are changing.
