More than 700M expected to watch Cup final

JOHANNESBURG - A worldwide television audience of more than 700 million is expected to watch the World Cup final between Netherlands and Spain on Sunday, FIFA said.

Soccer’s world governing body added that record viewing figures were reported in Germany for Wednesday’s semi-final with Spain, while the United States had reported a 50 percent increase in overall figures compared to 2006.

“I think the audience for the final will be bigger than 2006, when it was watched by 700 million people,” Niclas Ericson, director of FIFA’s TV division, told reporters.

He said that in Germany a record of nearly 32 million viewers had watched the semi-final, which Spain won 1-0 in Durban, for a market share of about 90 percent.

Spanish channel Telecinco reported 13.3 million for that match, nearly a third of the population and by far the highest audience for any programme in the last five years, FIFA said.

In the U.S., 19 million people watched the 2-1 second round defeat by Ghana, a record audience for a men’s soccer match. “Overall figures in the U.S. are up 50 percent,” said Ericson.

There were also record viewing figures in the Middle East, even though Al Jazeera’s signal was mysteriously blocked during the opener between South Africa and Mexico, which ended 1-1.

“If we find out who has done this, we will take appropriate measures,” said Ericson.

Where to go...

Ready for the big game

Toronto streets will either be awash in orange or red Sunday as the World Cup final kicks off between the Netherlands and Spain.

Hogtown bars and restaurants favoured by fans on either side were making final preparations Saturday.

Whether you’re cheering for Netherlands’ Oranje (The Orange) or Spanish La Furia Roja (Red Fury) or you’re just a fan of the beautiful game, there will be no shortage of places to watch Sunday’s match — although seats may be in high demand.

Spanish fans are expected to be out in force on College St.

Plaza Flamingo owner Andres Ceballos said his phone hasn’t stopped ringing with people trying to reserve tables at his College St. restaurant, just east of Bathurst St.

“It’s impossible,” Ceballos said. “(We’ll have) more than a full house. I’m scared of it.”

He’s been telling people to start lining up at 11 a.m. Sunday if they hope to get inside and he’s brought in extra everything, including staff for the last beautiful game of the tournament.

At Liberty Village, School Bakery and Cafe on Fraser Ave., near King St. W. and Dufferin St., will be hosting Dutch fans cheering on the Netherlands team. According to the website, dutchtreat.ca, Fraser Ave. will be blocked off and there will be a beer tent along with some extra TV screens.

At another Dutch headquarters, Betty’s on King St. E., just east of Sherbourne St., owner Alex Bartlett said they’ve stocked up on Grolsch beer, “a lot of Grolsch” for an expected full house.

“It’ll be full for sure,” Bartlett said.

During earlier Dutch World Cup games, Bartlett said the restaurant next door even opened its doors to take in overflow fans needing to see a TV.
