I understand that you If you are concerned with safety on board a US air carrier, but I wouldn't be. True, there is a threat for a terrorist attack, no denying that. But if you look at the statistics, US airlines are remarkably safe, ESPECIALLY considering the sheer numbers of flights per day.

Check out this link to accident rates:

http://www.airsafe.com/airline.htm

As far as major airlines go, Continental, Delta, Northwest, Southwest, United, and US-Air all rank better than Air Canada for fatal accident rates.

NO US airline has put a scratch on a passenger since 2006. Thats a LOT of people moved around the world.
No necessary safer. Don't think stats consider how many near-collisions at Ohara or close calls at JFK.

In terms of precautions, a disposable razor in my carry-on got thru 3 sets of X-ray scanners @ JFK flight to UK.

Pickering? Where's that? ;)
East of toronto, the airport fisrt surfaced in the 70's when trudeau was running things, had just started Mirabel( wonderful idea that) and a tender went out for a second airport around toronto for reasons no body can understand. After exhaustive studies they choose the worst possible site according to the studies. All grade A farmland. Turns out the other sites had liberal mp's in place pickering didnot.

Well at that point the feds expropriated the land and the shit storm started. The people concerned in MArkham and Pickering managed to get it shut down following and election.

The GTAA has begun restarting the process because their studies concluded that the current airport would run out of capacity in 2020 or so.

The GTAA commissioned a study that they set the ground rules for and then they did the study themselves because they had the lowest bid.

The airport did not get built when all this was farm land, now most of it is residential, I don't like their chances, specifically when the GTAA is empire building. Hamilton airport would be the logical expansion site to serve S.W. ontario but it is run by the Hamilton and area airport authority.

No Kidding!

I just went to book an Aeroplan flight to Europe in January and this "free" flight was going to cost me $350 in taxes, fees and fuel surcharges!

80,000 points if I will make connections and will do one trans Atlantic leg (either way!) in Economy or 317,000 points if I want direct non-stop flights each way.

There is no doubt in my mind that Air Canada and the GTAA are predatory opportunistic bastards.
i don't get it...if i get a quote from Buffalo to Rome with Expedia or Travelocity it = 1100 CADand go straight to Delta airlines ..i got a good price of 610 US out of Buffalo to Rome!? what the F#$K. I even tried through Delta > Toronto -Rome and get 900cad in that there is only 100 taxes

Amazing that Hong Kong can not only build an airport, but also build the island it sits on and a high speed transit system to the city core...and still operate better than Pearson???
What's so amazing about that?? When have quasi government entities in can. ever delivered value for money to the public. Never in my lifetime.

I Do not know what you guys are complaining about .
Try taking a flight from some little town like Sault Ste. Marie to Toronto or Winnipeg and have that flight cost more then an all inclusive week or two in Cuba .
The Flight costs out of Toronto are not so bad

Reason? While the federal government rent accounts for about 33% of Pearson's costs, Pearson's large-aircraft landing fee is a whopping 80% (!) higher than Narita's.
Where did you read that? I'm not disputing its truth, I just wanted to check for myself, and see if it was offset at all by small/medium plane landing fees. I had a hard enough time finding a list of Pearson landing fees, I couldn't find Narita at all.

The figures I cited were for 2006. I just looked up the numbers for 2008 and it's even worse!! And no, the fees are not "offset" by smaller aircraft fees... Pearson landing charges are double Narita's across the board. And the 747 landing fee at Pearson is 40 times(!) Atlanta's.

An Air Transport Research Society benchmark study (cited below) points out that efficiently-run airports are able to generate substantial income from non-aviation activities, such as "parking, office rentals, retail activity and real estate development". In 2006 Atlanta generated 69% of its income from non-aviation activities, while in Toronto only 30.2% of its revenue came from non-aviation activities.

"Many other Canadian airports including Vancouver, Calgary and Montreal generate more than 50% of their revenues from non-aviation activities, and thus, able to offer much lower aircraft landing fees", states the report.

From Air Transport Research Society 2008 Media Release:

BOEING 747-400 (524 Seats)
Toronto $12290 (190% more than Narita)
Tokyo-Narita $6446
NY-JFK $4681

Atlanta $300

BOEING 767-400 (304 seats)
Toronto $6321 (212% Narita)
Tokyo-Narita $2975
NY-JFK $2408
Vancouver $875
Frankfurt $733

Airbus 320-100 (150 seats)
Toronto $2275 (200% Narita)
Tokyo-Narita $1132
NY-JFK $867
Vancouver $264
Atlanta $67

CRJ200-LR (50 seats)
Toronto $745 (225% Narita)
Tokyo-Narita $330
