First the plastic bag ban was overturned, now shark fins are back maybe the City will get rid of the "no touch" rule too.

Well all would be fine with the plastic bag situation of Ford had had fought hard for the best interests of the people he represents (now and in the future) as opposed to the plastic industry...

That's said- I agree with the criticism of council for making decisions that won't stand up if challenged.

I agree with you Jennifer. Shark finning is gross, wasteful, tasteless and symbolic.

But, a town council is limited in its power to enact laws. They can't send Canada off to war, can't pass laws barring immigrants to the city etc. Those are matters of national interest and under the authority of the federal government. Take airports for instance. ONLY the federal government has authority over airports and railways and navigable water because they are part of the national transportation infrastructure. Otherwise, the local NIMBY's would elect councillors to close every airport, port, and rail line because they impacted their own backyard and without regard to their importance to the country as a whole.

Local councils need to get their act together on shit they have power over, instead of trying to overreach their authority by trying to influence world issues. Well intentioned but none of their business as a local municipal council best left to local issues.
... I understand. Time to get loud and fight for a federal ban.

... Hmmm I wonder if the china trade deal would prevent my favourite Conservatives from doing something on the issue. (?)

How's that worked out so far?

Don't get me wrong, I'm totally against shark fin soup and I'm glad that some people care enough to take the time to get to know the issue and do little things like the website you posted (as poorly designed and woefully incomplete as it may be) - but that doesn't make it effective or effectual. Again, complaining in the cyberverse is all well and good, but it doesn't accomplish much in the real world. Just sayin'.

The bag ban was lunacy -- bad for the environment, and bad for the economy.

I still can't figure out how it ever passed.

first of all, the ban is useless. And second if people like shark fin soup then theres nothing wrong with it. Animals have been going extinct for thousands of years I don;t see the big deal, and as far as I know the shark is not in any danger of extinction and is well protected in many waters. One way to solve the "problem" of endangered species is to farm the animals. farm tigers, sharks etc for commercial production just like with cows and chickens.
WTF! The world population of sharks has dropped by 90% in the last 40/50 years. In some fish the decline is ~99%. Since they are the top of the marine food chain that causes other problems. How about we tie your hands and feet and drop you overboard see how you make out?

You can't farm the top predator sharks as they are basically solitary animals and are too large. They don't school well.

you are dreaming, I love your optimism. and like others have said city council had no right to impose the ban. This is what govt does, they abuse their power
i heard that next they plan to ban tides.

Link please. Just kidding. I also heard that sharks need lots of open water so they can keep swimming. Otherwise, they sink to the bottom and drown.

It should be banned simply because it tastes awful, I swear there is some human condition that turns our tastebuds off when we overprice something and call it a delicassey.

Any facts to back up your rhetoric?

Try this on for size:

Original estimates in 2008 were that 457 million plastic bags were used every year in Toronto. With the introduction of the five cent bag fee, single-family waste composition audits conducted by the Solid Waste Management Division suggest that annual plastic bag usage has been reduced by 53%, corresponding to an estimated bag generation of about 215 million annually. After costs, it is estimated that the 5 cent bag fee generates about $5.4 million in net revenue annually across the City, assuming 100% of bags attract fees.
Beyond tracking, the only mistake the City made was not either getting the revenue or ensuring it was directed to specific programs.

But don't let the facts get in the way of your virulent anti-everything "left" arguments.

I think it is called Fugu or puffer fish, you need a license to prepare this sort of fish. I would think it is illegal in Canada.

Answer: Way too many loony liberal lefties in Toronto.
Actually, more like way too many people in Toronto who have this extreme view that the well being of our ecosystem and keeping species from going to extinction trumps the ridiculous idea that putting shark fin inside our soup (as opposed to something else like... anything) is somehow a cool thing to do.

What if you're swimming in the ocean and a Shark wants to eat you? :eyebrows:
Even if you were in a small pool with a shark in it, you're more likely to drown than to actually be eaten by the shark. True fact.
